Magic, motor oil and moxie will be featured on high school stages this season. Student actors and backstage techs are rehearsing and preparing spring plays and musicals. The following is a list of the productions, as well as ticket information for each high school.
St. Charles High School’s theater program will stage “Grease” 7 p.m. March 11 and 12 and 2 p.m. March 12 and 13 at the school at 5305 Piney Church Road in Waldorf. With book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, the play features the songs “Grease,” “You’re the One That I Want” and “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” by arrangement with Robert Stigwood. The story spotlights Sandy and Danny, the classic good girl/bad boy pairing. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for seniors, military members and students. Maurice J. McDonough High School will perform “Mary Poppins” 6:30 p.m. April 14, 15 and 16. There will be a matinee at 2 p.m. April 16. Based on the books by P.L. Travers, the musical tells the story of the Banks family and how the arrival of a magical nanny — practically perfect in every way — changes their lives. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students, senior citizens and members of the military with identification. Tickets for children and thespians are $7 each and Charles County Public Schools employees can receive one complimentary ticket with their school identification badge. North Point High School will stage “Willy Wonka” based on Roald Dahl’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” 7 p.m. April 14, 15 and 16 and 1 p.m. April 16 at the school at 2500 Davis Road in Waldorf. Charlie Bucket finds a golden ticket, and with his grandfather in tow, gets a tour of the chocolate factory operated by the eccentric Wonka. Westlake High School will perform “The Wiz” 7 p.m. April 14, 15 and 16 and 3 p.m. April 17 at the school at 3300 Middletown Road in Waldorf. Hit the Yellow Brick Road with Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Lion as they make their way to the Emerald City where each has a request of the Wizard, though he may not be all he’s purported to be. Henry E. Lackey High School will perform the musical “Into the Woods” 6:30 p.m. April 15 and 16 and 2 p.m. April 17 at the school at 3000 Chicamuxen Road in Indian Head. The play features classic fairytale characters while weaving in an original story about a childless baker, his wife and their hopes of having a family. Thomas Stone High School will perform “Once On This Island” 7 p.m. April 21, 22 and 23 at the school at 3785 Leonardtown Road in Waldorf. The one-act musical is based on the Rosa Guy novel, “My Love, My Love.” It is set in the French Antilles, following the life of peasant Ti Moune who falls in love with a man, a member of the upper class. The story includes inspiration from “The Little Mermaid” and “Romeo and Juliet.” Tickets are $5 and school system employees can receive a free ticket with their school identification badge. La Plata High School will stage “Sweet Charity” at 6:30 p.m. April 28 and 29 at the school at 6035 Radio Station Road in La Plata. It also will be performed at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. April 30. The play, with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon, follows taxi dancer Charity Hope Valentine who is unlucky in love but always looks on the bright side of life.
