Charles County Public Schools invites children to have “Lunch on Us” this summer.
Lunch on Us is Charles County’s free summer meal program for children, which is part of the state and federal summer food service programs that provide children the nutrition they need to learn, play and grow throughout the summer months. Lunch is free to all Charles County children 18 or younger and must be consumed at the site. There are no other restrictions or income guidelines, and no application form.
“The need for children to receive nutritious meals doesn’t end with the school year. Working as a community, Charles County Public Schools and our partner agencies are providing both hot and cold meals to children during the long summer vacation,” Superintendent Kimberly Hill said.
Lunches are prepared by the Charles County Public Schools Food Services Department and meet federal nutrition guidelines. A typical lunch may consist of a sandwich, fruit, vegetable and milk, and will vary each day of the week.
The lunch program is open every Monday through Friday from June 23 to Aug. 8, with the exception of July 4. All lunch sites are closed July 4; Westlake High School and Eva Turner Elementary School, which are used as voting locations, will not open for lunch on June 24.
Hot lunches will be distributed at the following locations:
- Westlake High School, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Henry E. Lackey High School, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Cold, bagged lunches will be distributed at the following mobile sites:
- Eva Turner Elementary School, 11-11:20 a.m.
- Children’s Aid Society, 3000 Huntington Circle, Waldorf, 11:30-11:50 a.m.
- Tri-County Youth Services Bureau, 75 Industrial Park Drive, Waldorf, 12-12:20 p.m., (open June 23-Aug. 8)
- Phoenix Run, 651 Piscataway Run, La Plata, 12-12:30 p.m.
- Charles Landing Apartments, Jameson Court, Indian Head, playground area, 12-12:30 p.m.
- Ell Lane Apartments, 12151 Ell Lane, Waldorf, management office, 12:30-12:50 p.m.
- Woodland Village Park, Thompson Lane, Indian Head, 12:45-1:15 p.m.
- Idlewood Trailer Park, Waldorf, 1-1:20 p.m.
- Elite Gymnastics, 2745 Old Washington Road, Waldorf, 1:30-1:50 p.m.
Charles County agencies and groups partnering to provide “Lunch on Us” are Charles County Public Schools, Charles County Advocacy Council for Children, Youth and Families, Department of Community Services – Recreation Division, Charles County Public Library, Department of Social Services and LifeStyles Inc.
According to Tanisha Sanders, youth in transition coordinator for CCPS, the free summer lunch program originated as part of Gov. Martin O’Malley’s “No Kid Hungry” initiative. The Charles County Children’s Advocacy Council for Youth and Families and through the Governor’s Office for Children are funding Lunch on Us. This is a partnership with Maryland Hunger Solutions, MSDE, Share Our Strength and the Partnership to End Childhood Hunger in Maryland.
