- William B. Wade Elementary School participated in an Earth Day event in April. Inspired by “Caine’s Arcade,” a cardboard arcade crafted by 9-year-old Caine Monroy in 2011 at his father’s used auto parts store in east Los Angeles. A short film was made about Monroy’s project. Wade second graders researched facts to write a news article about Monroy and learned how he made a positive mark on the world with his cardboard creations. Wade students participated in the school’s first cardboard “Go Green” challenge. Each second-grade student was challenged to create their own cardboard arcade game from recycled materials such as cardboard, shoeboxes, paper towel rolls, egg cartons and old CDs. Students, teachers and staff from other grades were invited come to play the cardboard arcade games and understand how different materials could be repurposed into something new.
- Henry E. Lackey High School’s I Am My Sister Club is a weekly teen-led group that prepares girls for a successful future through leadership development, peer support, self-esteem and community service all while having fun.
- Henry E. Lackey High School’s Advanced Via Individual Determination (AVID) students were invited to visit the Maryland State House in Annapolis on March 23. They met Delegates Edith Patterson and Sally Jameson prior to sitting in on a House session. During the session, the Speaker of the House Michael Busch welcomed and thanked Lackey’s AVID students for attending. Students also took a tour through the governor’s mansion to learn some of the history of past governors and first ladies. After leaving the State House, students visited the U.S. Naval Academy where students were able to see midshipmen and their living quarters.
