Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is distributing individual reports this week for students who took i-Ready program assessments earlier this fall. Reports will be sent home with students this week starting on Wednesday, Dec. 1. Students who took i-Ready assessments include the following. Students in Grades 1-8 participated in both a reading and math assessment. High school students enrolled in Algebra I this year completed the math assessment. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is hosting an online student and parent/guardian information session for the Maryland Seal of Biliteracy Program on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021, from 6 to 7 p.m. The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, district or state in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. A student can receive the Seal if he or she can demonstrate full proficiency in language learning as measured by rigorous proficiency assessments across a range of language skills. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) hosted its 2021 Middle School Archery Tournament on Nov. 19 at Milton M. Somers Middle School. Archers from the county’s public middle schools participated, divided by grade level into boy and girl teams. The top boy and girl archer by grade were recognized, as well as teams overall. Members of La Plata High School’s National Honor Society (NHS) recently collected food for, put together and delivered Thanksgiving food baskets. Families of La Plata students were selected by the school’s pupil personnel worker (PPW) to receive the food baskets that were brimming with donations collected by NHS members from club members, teachers and staff, and Key Club members. The program has been overseen by the group for more than two decades, Nicole Deavers, who co-sponsors NHS with Victoria Lee, said. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has partnered with the Charles County Department of Health to host free COVID-19 vaccine clinics for children ages 5 and older at area schools. Registration for the below clinics is available at https://charlescountycovid.org/vaccine-registration/. The clinics will offer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine and take place in either the listed school’s gymnasium or cafeteria. The Charles County Public Schools Career and Technical Education (CTE) program application opens 8 a.m. on Nov. 22 and ends at 3 p.m. on Dec. 21 for Grades eight and 10. Some CTE programs require students to apply for admission due to limited enrollment, while others are available at all seven Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) high schools that students sign up for through their school counselor during course selection. The Board of Education at its Nov. 9 meeting approved the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) middle school redistricting plan, which takes effect next school year. In a vote of 4 to 2, the Board approved Superintendent Maria V. Navarro’s recommendation of a modified version of Proposal A which balances state-rated capacity and includes movement of students among all eight CCPS middle school zones.   The redistricting measures address the anticipated growth in student enrollment while adhering closely to each school’s state rated capacity guidelines. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is partnering with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and a safety technology company, BusPatrol, to support a new school bus safety program in Charles County. The program provides external cameras on school buses to deter drivers from illegally passing stopped school buses. Through the partnership, all Charles County school buses will be equipped with external stop-arm safety cameras that provide a 360-degree view of the bus. This includes interior, windshield, rearview and sideload camera views, which also provide a visual of students boarding and exiting the bus. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is updating some of its COVID-19 operating procedures that address quarantined students, and spectator capacities at indoor events. These updates take effect this month as CCPS continues to work with both the local and state health departments to monitor public health conditions and COVID-19 data. The school system is also reviewing its COVID-19 operating procedures to possibly expand field trip opportunities, adjust lunch schedules for students, add additional indoor events and expand its volunteer program to allow more visitors into schools. The Board of Education of Charles County is holding a 6 p.m. work session on Monday, Nov. 22, in the boardroom at the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Jesse L. Starkey Administration Building. The Starkey Building is located at 5980 Radio Station Road in La Plata. The meeting is open to the public.
