Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) high school juniors and seniors can audition virtually to be an anchor for NewsBreak, the television program that features news on what’s happening around the school system. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has updated its face mask use requirements for all staff, students and visitors to schools, buildings, centers and all other CCPS facilities. Effective Friday, July 30, 2021, mask use is now required for anyone inside a CCPS building. This applies to everyone, including individuals already vaccinated against COVID-19. As CCPS prepares for the reopening of schools on Aug. 30, the mask mandate is in effect until further notice. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Superintendent Maria Navarro, Ed.D., is hosting two meet-and-greet events next week for the community. The meet-and-greet events are open to parents, students, CCPS staff and community members interested in learning more about Navarro and her plans for CCPS. The Board of Education of Charles County is looking for applications from county residents interested in serving on the Charles County Board of Education Ethics Panel. There is one opening on the five-member panel, and the selected applicant will begin a term immediately that expires July 1, 2022. The ethics panel interprets ethics regulations and provides advisory opinions to Board members and employees subject to the regulations. Charles County families with children who are 3, 4 and/or 5 can take part in virtual family engagement Workshop Wednesdays through the Summer Virtual Learning Launch. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) staff designed the workshops for parents and children to participate together on July 21 and 28, and Aug. 4. Registered participants will receive a link to join the workshops and will get information on picking up a bag of materials to use during the meetings. Maria Navarro, Ed.D., superintendent of Charles County Public Schools (CCPS), announced her first administrative appointment today, naming Kevin E. Lowndes as deputy superintendent of CCPS. Lowndes is the current associate superintendent in the office of special education for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). The Board of Education met today and in a unanimous vote approved the appointment of Lowndes, who begins his role as deputy superintendent of CCPS Aug. 16. The Board of Education is holding an executive session at 6 p.m., Monday, July 12, at the Jesse L. Starkey Administration Building. The Starkey Building is located at 5980 Radio Station Road in La Plata. The Charles County Department of Health is partnering with Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) to host free pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinics this summer. The clinics will be held outdoors in school parking lots during the curbside meal site hours of 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Vaccine availability includes the Pfizer vaccine, which is available for children ages 12 and older, and adults. Children receiving a vaccine must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Parents and guardians should bring photo identification to the clinic. All Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students will receive free breakfast and lunch during the 2021-2022 school year. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture extended a waiver to provide free meals for children at school until next June. The first day of the 2021-2022 school year for students is Monday, Aug. 30. Meal offerings will include standard breakfast and lunch items such as cereal, milk, juice and fruit.
