Superintendent Kimberly Hill today announced the appointment of three new school principals, six vice principal appointments and six vice principal transfers. Schools affected by principal changes are Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School, Piccowaxen Middle School and Maurice J. McDonough High School. The Superintendent did not recommend any principal transfers for the upcoming school year. New principal appointments are: Shannon Finnegan, vice principal at Higdon, will move to the principal position at the school. Seven members of the Class of 1969, or their representatives, will receive their original high school diplomas and the Board of Education will recognize 15 other former students whose distribution of diplomas was disrupted following a civil rights protest at La Plata High School. The Board of Education of Charles County on June 10 will celebrate the members of the Class of 1969 who were instrumental in changing the way La Plata High School selected its Majorettes and Warriorettes. St. Charles High School seniors were honored today in the first Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) graduation ceremony. Held at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, the ceremony was the first of seven planned for the next week in a new outdoor format. The Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Class of 2021 will be honored this week during outdoor graduation ceremonies set for May 28 and June 1-3 at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf. The Class of 2021 is the first graduating class to participate in outdoor graduation ceremonies at the stadium. In prior years, seniors graduated in ceremonies planned for the Convocation Center at North Point High School. Due to COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, CCPS was excited to offer an outdoor opportunity for graduating seniors this year. La Plata High School junior Ian Herd has spent the 2020-21 school year advocating for students. As the current Student Member of the Charles County Board of Education, Herd has weighed in on Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) programs and policies for the past year. A St. Charles High School graduate will be heading to Harvard University in the fall, and among her many honors is a National Merit Scholarship. Evangeline Gilmer, who is set to graduate third in her class at St. Charles’s ceremony on Friday, May 28, was named one of 7,500 winners of the $2,500 scholarship. Each year, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. screens about 1.5 million qualifying students. Of those, only about 16,000 students will be named semifinalists based on their PSAT scores and other achievements. Several Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students competed in the Maryland History Day virtual event held earlier this month after placing at the local event. Three students received special awards for their project entries. Lauren Compton, an eighth grader at Piccowaxen Middle School, received the George Washington Leadership Award by Mount Vernon for her project, “The Culper Spy Ring.” Compton advanced to the state virtual event after earning first place in the junior division of the individual website category at the Charles County virtual event. The Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) curbside meal program continues through the end of the 2020-21 school year. The last day for curbside meals at participating school sites is Wednesday, June 16. Wednesday, June 16, is the last day of school for CCPS students. The following are updates to the curbside meals program. The site at St. Charles High School is closed May 28, and June 1-3 to accommodate parking for CCPS high school graduations. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) recently partnered with the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) to participate in a voluntary free weekly COVID-19 screening program for students and staff. This is a pilot program in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to provide increased testing resources to schools.
