Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education on Feb. 25 honored 34 Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students for gifted education accomplishments. Students are nominated for the recognition by the learning resource teacher at their schools. Criteria include academic performance at a high level, participation in a gifted education program, and being a current recipient of a local school system, state or national award. The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education honored eight Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) educators for their efforts and accomplishments in gifted education. Kristen Modes, CCPS instructional specialist for gifted education, was honored with an Outstanding Educator in Gifted and Talented Education – Local School or School System Program Coordinator Award. Modes has been in her current role for the past two years and previously spent several years as a CCPS learning resource teacher. The Board of Education of Charles County in a unanimous vote at its Feb. 22 work session approved an April 19 Phase 4 start date for Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students. The Board voted on a recommendation from Superintendent of Schools Kimberly Hill for CCPS to move forward with its reopening plan. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) hosted its annual winter chess tournament Feb. 20 in person at Henry E. Lackey High School. To accommodate COVID-19 social distancing and safety guidelines, this year’s winter tournament was limited to students in Grades 4-12. A total of 52 students competed in four rounds of grade-level division play, and one champion was named per grade level. Champions received a trophy and all other participants received medals. Due to inclement weather conditions, Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) will operate on a Virtual Instruction, Code V tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 19, 2021. The following applies to students during a Virtual Instruction, Code V.  Virtual instruction, Code V: CCPS buildings and offices closed  Virtual instruction starts on time for all students.  Learning support centers and internet cafes at schools are closed. This includes those students who are bused to internet cafes for technology access.    All CCPS meal service is canceled. Due to inclement weather conditions, Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is operating on a schools closed, Code Blue status today, Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021. No virtual instruction will take place today. All CCPS offices and school buildings are closed. CCPS meals sites are closed and there is no mobile meal service today. The Board of Education of Charles County is holding an in-person work session 6 p.m., Monday, Feb. 22, at the Jesse L. Starkey Administration Building. The Starkey Building is located at 5980 Radio Station Road in La Plata. Public Forum for this meeting is in person. No virtual format will be offered. The Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) spring athletic season starts March 15, with physical conditioning sessions beginning March 1. Spring sports include baseball, lacrosse, softball, track and field, and tennis. The season is open to any CCPS high school student, whether attending school virtually or returning to school in person March 22 during Phase 2. CCPS will follow health and safety guidelines that are detailed in spring sports bulletins supplied by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) and listed at www.ccboe.com. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) will reopen its doors to students on Monday, March 22. Students identified to return for in-person learning under Phase 2 and with parent permission start back March 22. CCPS recently provided parents with a return to school survey to begin planning for the reopening of schools. During Phase 2, the learning schedule remains the same.
