The Board of Education of Charles County is looking for applications from county residents interested in serving on the Charles County Board of Education Ethics Panel. There is one opening on the five-member panel, and the selected applicant will finish out a term that expires on July 1, 2022. The ethics panel interprets ethics regulations and provides advisory opinions to Board members and employees subject to the regulations. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is hosting its annual winter chess tournament in person at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Henry E. Lackey High School. The tournament is limited to chess players in Grades 4-12. Parents and family members will not be permitted to remain on site during the tournament. This is a precautionary measure to limit the amount of people inside of the playing area. Parents can watch the tournament virtually through Zoom with a limited panoramic view. Superintendent Kimberly Hill today announced the appointment of Steven Roberts as the Director of Accountability for Charles County Public Schools (CCPS). Roberts, principal at Maurice J. McDonough High School, started his career with CCPS in 1997 as a mathematics teacher at Westlake High School. He worked at Westlake until 2011 and served as the school’s varsity wrestling coach, algebra team leader, mathematics department chair and school testing coordinator. Four Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) seniors have added an additional virtual learning experience to their resumes this school year. Seniors Brynna Bode, Denise Demontagnac, Morgan Jones and Christina Walker were recently named 2021 Maryland Student Pages through the General Assembly’s annual program. The experience for these students will differ this year due to COVID-19 safety guidelines. The legislative session kicked off this week in both an in-person and virtual format for lawmakers. The Board of Education at its Jan. 12 virtual meeting recognized four annual Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) resolutions. The resolutions highlight Black History Month, Career and Technical Education Month, Gifted and Talented Education Month and National School Counseling Week. The school system celebrates Black History Month annually in February. The 2021 theme is The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity. Each month, the Board honors staff members chosen by their school principals who demonstrate their dedication to teaching and learning. The recognition ceremony was held in a virtual format and featured pre-recorded introductions and recognitions from school principals. School principals annually select one student and staff member for Board recognition. Students are honored for accomplishments in the areas of academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility. The Board of Education of Charles County today in a vote of four to three elected Latina Wilson as its chairperson and Virginia McGraw as its vice chairperson at the start of its Jan. 12 meeting. Wilson and McGraw exchange Board leadership roles for the next calendar year. The Board votes annually in January to elect a chairperson and vice chairperson. The term for each role is one year. Wilson was first elected to the Board in November 2018. Today begins Wilson’s first term as Board chairperson. A St. Charles High School art teacher is experiencing what it’s like to be the subject of a work, rather than the creator. Shelton Hawkins recently landed on the cover of Shore Magazine, a publication centered on the people and way of life on the Eastern Shore. The magazine named Hawkins one of the local millennials making a difference in the world.
