The Board of Education of Charles County honored four Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students at its Dec. 8 meeting. School principals annually select one student and staff member for Board recognition. Students are honored for accomplishments in the areas of academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility. School closures announced earlier this year caused CCPS to postpone in-person student and staff recognitions. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is offering additional meal bags at all curbside distribution sites starting Friday, Dec. 11. The extra meals will be handed out on Fridays to ensure children have meals for Saturday and Sunday. The meal bags will include breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack for the weekend, and are free to all children ages 2 to 18. The items in the weekend meal bags will include more frozen and shelf stable items than the meal bags given out during the week. Maurice J. McDonough High School is hosting a virtual play next month. The drama department will stream “Game of Tiaras (one-act): Stay-At-Home Edition” by Don Zolidis. The show is set to stream virtually on Jan. 8-9. Interested viewers will be able to access the link online next week at http://mhsdrama303.booktix.com. Check the website for link updates. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is looking to expand its free meal distribution to the neighborhoods of our families. This includes free grab-and-go meal delivery by school bus to local neighborhoods. In order to plan the best routes that are most convenient for families, CCPS is asking parents to complete a quick survey linked here. A Spanish survey is available here. The It’s Academic team from North Point High School earned the top spot in the virtual event held Dec. 2. The team of captain James “Jimmy” Olmsted, Kelsey Njembu and Yusra Umer scored 300 points to earn first place. Coming in second place was the team from La Plata High School with 260 points, and Maurice J. McDonough High School’s team with 250 points in third place. The Board of Education’s next regular meeting is 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8. To maintain social distancing and safety guidelines, the Board will meet virtually for this meeting. The meeting will stream live on the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) website, www.ccboe.com and air on Comcast Channel 96 and Verizon Fios Channel 12. Two Charles County Public high schools – Henry E. Lackey and La Plata – are hosting virtual play events this month. Henry E. Lackey High School’s virtual play is set to debut at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11. The play will be available for 24 hours, but those interested in watching must email Austin Gore at rgore@ccboe.com for the virtual link. The annual Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) It’s Academic tournament will air at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 2. Teams from the seven high schools will compete in rounds and answer questions in a quiz-style format. Topics range from history, literature, science, math and mythology to sports and current events. This year’s event takes place in a virtual format. The first-place team from the event goes on to compete against Centreville and Fairfax high schools in a match set to air Feb. 27 on NBC4. A family internet center at T.C. Martin Elementary School will open Tuesday, Dec. 1, to aid students in virtual learning. Hours for the Martin internet center are 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The Martin location is one of four Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) schools to provide indoor internet. Other sites are at Dr. Thomas L. Higdon and Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy elementary schools, and Henry E. Lackey High School. John Childers, a La Plata High School social studies teacher, has been named 2019-20 Coach of the Year for baseball by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The NFHS honors a Coach of the Year in the top 10 girls sports and 10 boys sports each year.
