The annual Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) It’s Academic tournament will air at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 2. Teams from the seven high schools will compete in rounds and answer questions in a quiz-style format. Topics range from history, literature, science, math and mythology to sports and current events. A family internet center at T.C. Martin Elementary School will open Tuesday, Dec. 1, to aid students in virtual learning. Hours for the Martin internet center are 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The Martin location is one of four Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) schools to provide indoor internet. Other sites are at Dr. Thomas L. Higdon and Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy elementary schools, and Henry E. Lackey High School. John Childers, a La Plata High School social studies teacher, has been named 2019-20 Coach of the Year for baseball by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The NFHS honors a Coach of the Year in the top 10 girls sports and 10 boys sports each year. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is expanding operating hours at its 17 meal distribution sites starting Monday, Nov. 30. Meal sites will be open for curbside distribution Monday through Friday from 7 to 8 a.m., and from 10:30 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. Meals remain free to children ages 2 to 18 through the end of the 2020-21 school year in June. There is no meal service, including mobile meals, on days when students are not in school. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is closed Wednesday, Nov. 25 through Friday, Nov. 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday. The closure applies to all schools, CCPS buildings and administrative offices. Next week, online learning for students and teachers is Nov. 23-24. Normal hours resume Monday, Nov. 30. The two-hour early dismissal printed in the 2020-2021 Parent Handbook/Calendar on Dec. 7 has been canceled for students. Dec. 7 is a regular day of online learning for students. The Board of Education of Charles County is holding a virtual work session at 6 p.m., Monday, Nov. 23. Due to COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines in place, the meeting will be held virtually. Superintendent Kimberly A. Hill formally notified the Board of Education Tuesday morning that she does not plan to ask for renewal of her contract in 2021. The Superintendent of Schools said she plans to retire at the end of the 2020-21 school year and wanted to provide the Board with ample opportunity to fill her position before her final day on June 30, 2021. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is getting high marks on the Maryland School Breakfast Report Card. Maryland Hunger Solutions, a nonprofit that promotes nutrition outreach, recently released its annual breakfast report card. For school year 2019, CCPS earned an A-, bringing its grade up from a B+ in 2018. The showcase features program-specific videos on each CCPS CTE program and is posted at https://www.ccboe.com/cte/index.php/cte-showcase-2020. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has suspended all sports conditioning and skill sessions for student athletes, effective immediately. The suspension is a precautionary measure due to the increasing COVID-19 cases in Charles County. CCPS staff will revisit allowing student athletes to participate in conditioning and skill/training sessions at a later time. High school athletic directors have notified their student athletes about the suspension. CCPS has guidelines in place for athletics and extracurricular activities for students.
