Westlake High School is hosting the SAT exam in person on Saturday, Nov. 7. Any student who is registered to take the exam at Westlake should follow the guidelines listed below. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has made some changes to its meal distribution service. The following changes are effective Monday, Nov. 9. Meal sites are open for curbside distribution Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the exception of Malcolm Elementary School. A site list is included below. The final day for curbside meal distribution at Malcolm is Friday, Nov. 6. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) hosted its annual fall chess tournament Oct. 24 in person at Thomas Stone High School. To accommodate COVID-19 social distancing and safety guidelines, this year’s fall tournament was limited to students in Grades 4-12. A total of 38 students competed in three rounds of grade-level division play, and one champion was named per grade level. Top finishers also were named in each division. Educational Systems Federal Credit Union recently honored Benjamin Stoddert Middle School physical education teacher Brittany Aley with a professional development award. Two Class of 2020 graduates, Taylor Colbert and Camryn Fryer, also received scholarships from the credit union. Educational Systems FCU honors educators and students annually through its Support Education Foundation. Teachers and students apply for the awards and must meet certain eligibility criteria. Aley received the $1,000 Maurice Erly Professional Development Award. Aley is in her third year of teaching at Stoddert. The St. Charles High School meal site was closed today due to a heavy volume of early voting traffic. Meal service will reopen at St. Charles tomorrow. For the next week, St. Charles is relocating its food distribution to the bus parking lot near the tennis courts. Relocating the food distribution site to the bus parking lot should alleviate some traffic and provide a safe space for families picking up meals for students. The 2020 Virtual Maryland College Application Campaign (MCAC) is Oct. 26 to 30 and is open to all high school students. The campaign’s goal is to provide hands-on assistance in filling out a college application and becoming familiar with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion process. The MCAC ensures that each participating student submits at least one postsecondary application. Each high school college and career advisor is sending seniors a checklist with links and additional resources for filling out applications. The Board of Education and Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) are hosting a virtual meeting through Zoom on the middle school redistricting process at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26. Staff members will explain the redistricting timeline, committee selection process, how alternatives will be created and provide opportunities for community input. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) will begin Phase 2 of its reopening plan on Monday, Nov. 9. The school system is preparing to welcome more than 3,200 students back to schools across the county. Part of Phase 2 planning includes enhanced safety guidelines for students using bus transportation. Safety is a top priority for CCPS and transportation staff have implemented additional school bus procedures to keep students safe on the bus. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is accepting applications from high school seniors interested in participating in the 2021 Maryland General Assembly Legislative Page Program. Each year, CCPS selects three high school seniors and one alternate to represent the school system in the program. The program provides interested high school seniors with an opportunity to learn first-hand about government and the legislative process.
