The Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Class of 2020 will be honored during in-person celebrations and virtual graduations to air starting June 11. This year’s ceremonies may be different for the more than 2,075 graduating seniors, but the accomplishments of this class are historical. The Class of 2020 earned a record number of scholarship offers totaling $124,840,988. This is the highest amount for a CCPS graduating class in at least a decade. Graduation for the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Class of 2020 may look different this year, but each graduating senior will be recognized during in-person events and virtual graduations. More than 2,000 seniors will walk a stage at their respective high schools next week as part of an optional in-person recognition event. Six Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) seniors in the Class of 2020 are finalists in the College Board’s Opportunity Scholarship program. Students who participate in the program complete six college planning actions using the College Board website, such as creating a list of colleges to research and taking a practice SAT exam. Students opt-in to participate during their junior year of high school and create a College Board profile online. The 11 meal distribution sites will be closed Monday, May 25, as Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) observes Memorial Day. The sites will reopen at 11 a.m. May 26. Meal sites at high schools are closed on the day of the school’s graduation events. Sites will be closed at Henry E. Lackey and Maurice J. McDonough high schools on June 1, at Westlake High School on June 2 and St. Charles High School on June 3. Since she was a kindergarten student, Casey Cleary has been comfortable in a classroom and knew it was a place she belonged – and not only as a student. “I wanted to be the one who wrote on the chalkboard, so I figured I had to be the teacher to do that,” Cleary said. Two Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students achieved Carson Scholar status earlier this month. They are Jayden Hill, a fourth-grade student at Billingsley Elementary School, and Kiley Grollman, a fifth grader at Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School. The Carson Scholars program recognizes students for high academic achievement, humanitarian qualities and community service. As Carson Scholars, both Grollman and Hill receive a $1,000 college scholarship. Orlena Whatley has been serving meals and handing out instructional packets to families for the past two months, and that’s what the Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School principal was doing last week when she learned she is the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) 2020 Principal of the Year. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) graduating seniors in the Class of 2020 will be honored the week of June 1 during in-person recognitions at their schools. Last week, Superintendent of Schools Kimberly Hill announced an update for graduating seniors with an option to walk across a stage in their cap and gown. Each high school is coordinating a date and time slot for students to walk across an outdoor stage at their respective school. America plans to honor the Class of 2020 on Saturday, May 16 in a special one-hour television show featuring a commencement speech by former President Barack Obama and messages from Michelle Obama and other celebrities. The last day of school for Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students for the 2019-20 school year is Thursday, June 11. This is pending approval from the Maryland State Board of Education. The Board of Education of Charles County during its May 12 meeting approved the use of a five-day waiver to the 180-day student requirement. Elementary school teachers will post report cards by June 15. Report cards for middle and high school students will be mailed to the address on file with CCPS on June 22.
