Thirty-four of Charles County’s 36 public schools rated on the 2019 Maryland Report Card received 3, 4 or 5 stars, according to data released today by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). MSDE released its new accountability report card today, providing information on every county and school in the state. The report card measures the success of schools and identifies areas for improvement. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is looking for volunteers interested in helping with VEX Robotics events. Dates and events include a Dec. 14 robotics scrimmage, the Feb. 1 middle school competition and the Feb. 15 high school competition. All events are set to take place at Theodore G. Davis Middle School in Waldorf. As part of the VEX Robotics program students design and build a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. The Board of Education’s next monthly meeting is Tuesday, Dec. 10 at the Jesse L. Starkey Administration Building on Radio Station Road in La Plata. The public portion of the meeting begins at 1 p.m. The meeting is televised live on Comcast Channel 96 and Verizon FiOS Channel 12, and is rebroadcast throughout the week. Students at the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center are holding a coat drive until January. Organized by members of the center’s National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) and SkillsUSA, the coats collected for men, women and children will be donated to St. Mary Church, Newport. New and gently worn coats can be dropped off at Stethem between 7:50 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. Monday through Friday when school is in session. The annual Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) It’s Academic tournament is 6 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 4 at St. Charles High School. Teams from the seven high schools will compete in rounds and answer questions in a quiz-style format. Topics range from history, literature, science, math and mythology to sports and current events.            The tournament will air live on the CCPS website at ccboe.com, starting at 6 p.m. The first-place team from Wednesday’s event will compete against St. Albans and Stone Bridge high schools in a match set to air April 4 on NBC4.
