Second and third graders at Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School are brushing up on their math and reading skills with the school’s Jump Start summer program. For three hours a day over two weeks, students work with teachers in areas that they will be tested on during the school year. All Dr. Brown second and third graders were invited to the program with about 31 signing up, said Karen Lewis, the school’s principal. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students recently competed in the 55th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference held in Louisville, Ky.  A team of the state’s most talented Career and Technology Education (CTE) high school students showcased their skills in 94 CTE competitions. More than 6,400 students from the United States, along with those from Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands, competed. Lt. Col. Jonathan Brown, a U.S. Air Force veteran, has been named the 2019 Crystal Apple Award winner. The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Maryland awards the honor for excellence in teaching. He was the American Legion Harry White Wilmer Post 82 Auxiliary’s finalist for the state title and will receive the state award later this month at the auxiliary’s convention in Ocean City. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) juniors and seniors can take financial literacy for original credit this fall at the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center. The course is a mix of online material and in-person requirements for completion. The fall session is the final opportunity for any junior or senior to complete the financial literacy course at Stethem. The change does not affect any student who is already registered to complete the course during the CCPS summer school program. The course begins Sept. 23 and ends Jan. 16, 2020. Last week, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan declared July 5 as a holiday for state employees and the Board of Charles County Commissioners added July 5 as a county holiday. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kimberly Hill has announced a system-wide holiday for all Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) staff on Friday, July 5. North Point High School JROTC students recently spent a week introducing middle schoolers to the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. JROTC has a program in each of the county’s high schools. North Point’s Summer Leadership School (SLS) gives rising freshmen interested in JROTC the opportunity to learn about it before committing when they start high school in a couple of months. At SLS, students are split into four groups — known as flights — where they learn more about teamwork and leadership.
