DeJuan Woods Jr., a rising senior at Thomas Stone High School, was sworn in today as the new Student Member to the Board of Education for the 2019-20 school year. Woods began his term today and officially participated in the Board meeting. The Student Member works with a committee of student liaisons, one student from each high school, throughout the school year. Each high school has a liaison, which is selected by methods approved by the school’s Student Government Association (SGA) and principal. The Board of Education’s next monthly meeting is Tuesday, June 11 at the Jesse L. Starkey Administration Building on Radio Station Road in La Plata. The public portion of the meeting begins at 1 p.m. and student and staff recognition starts at 4:30 p.m. The meeting is televised live on Comcast Channel 96 and Verizon FiOS Channel 12 and rebroadcast throughout the week. Though Maurice J. McDonough High School is the smallest in the county, it is big on school pride. “We have continued to believe in ourselves as a class and instilled a pride in our school that will no doubt carry on to future students. Our athletic teams competed against much larger schools and found success. The 242 members of Henry E. Lackey High School’s Class of 2019 were all together for the last time June 1 when they graduated following four years of hard work and fun times. The Charles County Convocation Center was filled with cheers this morning as the Westlake High School Class of 2019 began their future as high school graduates. A total of 298 students received their diploma today in a ceremony in which the accomplishments of the class were celebrated. The Wolverine Class of 2019 earned $18,274,616 in scholarship offers and is led by valedictorian Migue Darcera.
