The Charles County Department of Health is holding immunization clinics for children who need vaccines required to attend school. Maryland law requires students to have minimum immunization levels to attend school. Required vaccines depend on the age and grade level of the child and include DPT, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, hepatitis B, Hib, Prevnar, Tdap and meningococcal. Several Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students will receive free breakfast during the coming school year, courtesy in part of funding provided by the Maryland Meals for Achievement program. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students will see an increased focus on literacy in the next couple of years thanks to a more than $2.7 million federal grant, one of the highest of its kind awarded in Maryland. The Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grant aims to improve literacy — especially among students who are economically disadvantaged, have disabilities or are English language learners. Superintendent of Schools Kimberly Hill, along with other Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) staff, is hosting a school safety and security Town Hall on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at St. Charles High School.
