“Every student deserves to go to school without fearing for his or her safety,” Congressman Steny Hoyer said as he opened a roundtable discussion on Wednesday to discuss school safety with Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students. One bad night took the life and potential of one student. It took the promise of another and still it will affect others in ways that have yet to be seen.  “You had one bad night,” William R. Charles County Public Schools hosted the 2018 History, Industry, Technology and Science (HITS) Expo on March 24 at St. Charles High School, during which students presented History Day entries. First- and second-place category winners advance to the state competition on April 28 at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. More than 300 students from Charles County Public elementary, middle and high schools, as well as county private schools, entered their science or history fair projects for awards as part of the third annual Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) History, Industry, Science and Technology (HITS) Expo held March 24 at St. Charles High School in Waldorf. The Expo includes the annual Science and History Fair student projects and showcases CCPS programs available for students. For the past few months on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, a group of J.C. Parks Elementary School students has been staying after school to spend quality time with peers from their feeder high school – Henry E. Lackey. This is part of a pilot mentoring program launched this school year through the support of Parks Principal Greg Miller. He said it was a chance for his students and school to benefit from a supportive relationship with a neighboring school. Due to weather conditions, all Charles County public schools will open two hours late tomorrow, Thursday, March 22, 2018. Staff will continue to monitor road conditions for any additional changes to tomorrow’s schedule. There is a code two, which is a two-hour delay, for staff that follow the code system. All morning prekindergarten classes are canceled tomorrow. The AlphaBest program at all county elementary schools will open at 8 a.m. Parents, staff and students should check in the morning for any additional changes to the school schedule.
