Sharron Rouse, coordinator of Title I programs for Charles County Public Schools, recently presented at the National Title I Conference in Philadelphia, Feb. 8 to 11. Rouse presented “Best Practices for Collaboration” along with Title I representatives from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), Harford County Public Schools and Prince George’s County Public Schools. The Board of Education presented six resolutions to Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students and staff at its Feb. 13 meeting. The Board votes annually to accept resolutions. The following resolutions were presented: Black History Month; Career and Technology Education Month; Fine and Performing Arts Month; Gifted and Talented Education Month; Read Across America (Charles County); and Women’s History Month. The school system highlights Black History Month annually in February. The theme for 2018 is African Americans in Times of War. The Board of Education at its Feb. 13 meeting honored six Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) exemplary employees for their dedication to student success and commitment to teaching and learning. Honored were Julie Colaizzi, Dr. Alan Freeman, Pam Pichola, Connie Sorzano, Nichole Thomas and Tina Thomas. Colaizzi is a learning resource teacher at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School. She has been teaching with CCPS for the past 13 years. She started her career at the elementary school level and has been working with middle school students for three years. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) annually highlights Job Shadow Day activities throughout the month of February. Today, the Board of Education participated in the program and invited a group of fifth graders to shadow them during the first part of their monthly meeting. Shadowing the Board today, as well as Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kimberly Hill, were nine students from Malcolm, Dr. Samuel A. Mudd and William B. Wade elementary schools. The Board of Education at its Feb. 13 meeting honored six Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students for outstanding accomplishments in academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility. Honored were D’Kairi Boone, Adrienne Rae Briones, Noah Hyson, Dakota Knott, Nehemiah Strawberry and Kayleigh Stewart. Boone is an eighth grader at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School. Volunteers are needed for Read Across Charles County on March 2. The annual celebration — usually held around the birthday of Dr. Seuss — promotes the love of reading. To take part in the celebration, volunteers can call the principal of the elementary or middle school where they would like to read. The principal will schedule a time for the volunteer’s visit. A determined mermaid, a showgirl hiding out in a habit and Wednesday Addams in love are among the characters that will tell their stories in spring’s high school plays. Actors and behind-the-scenes crews in Charles County Public Schools’ (CCPS) seven high schools are readying shows that are fanciful, romantic and funny. Seventh- and eighth-grade aces set up earlier this year for middle school volleyball tournaments. Seventh-grade girls played at Henry E. Lackey High School Jan. 30, with seventh-grade boys having a tournament on the same day at La Plata High School. On Feb. 1, eighth-grade girls took to the court at Lackey with eighth-grade boys playing at La Plata. Due to inclement weather conditions, all Charles County public schools will open two hours late today, Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018. There is a code two, which is a two hour delay, for staff who follow the code system. All morning prekindergarten classes are canceled for today.
