Students in the Teacher Academy of Maryland (TAM) program at the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center recently visited St. Mary’s College to learn about programs available for students interested in majoring in education. More than 20 students are enrolled in the TAM program at Stethem, which is one of several career and technology education (CTE) programs offered for Charles County Public Schools high school students. Westlake High School recently held an ice cream social for students who had perfect attendance during the first quarter of the school year. Students who were referral free also were invited to attend. The ice cream social is just one event coordinated by Westlake staff to support its Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program. The social was held last month and more than 100 students participated. Students at Eva Turner Elementary School celebrated Red Ribbon Week in October. Students at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School joined together for the Thanksgiving holiday on a mission to provide for the school community. “We wanted to help those who can’t celebrate with their families. It makes us feel good knowing we are helping,” said eighth grader Tayloni Ricks. Ricks, along with nearly 60 other students, is part of the Stoddert student government association (SGA). Over the past few weeks, the SGA sponsored a schoolwide food drive with the goal of helping families in need. Three Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students are preparing for what they refer to as “an opportunity of a lifetime.” Seniors Jonathon Moss, Kyle Smith and Ella Videgla will join other Maryland high school students in 2018 as Legislative Pages. Student pages work with the General Assembly for two weeks during the legislative session. Kennedy Harris, a North Point High School senior, was chosen as the student alternate. A Thanksgiving tradition continued at Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School when its students — past and present — along with staff opened the doors to senior citizens and guests Nov. 17 for the 31st Thanksgiving celebration. The event was started by the late Elvira Barnes, a guidance counselor at Mt. Hope. It has been continued by Connie Bannister, a secretary at the school, and a team of volunteers who spend the week leading up to the lunch shopping for ingredients and cooking. The SkillsUSA Maryland Fall Leadership Conference was held earlier this month in Ocean City. Students could earn the Statesman and Advanced Statesman awards and attend workshops and activities. Nineteen North Point High School students attended the conference. “It builds character,” said North Point senior Umi Daniels of being a part of SkillsUSA. Daniels, who is in the cosmetology program, said she used to be reserved around new people. “It helped me break out of my shell,” she said. The La Plata High School Marching Band was honored last month as the overall Group 1A winner at the 2017 USBands Maryland State Championship. La Plata’s Marching Band earned the top spot among six other competing schools with a score of 91.425. This is the second consecutive year the band earned first place at the state level. The event was held at Towson University in Baltimore on Oct. 21.
