The Office of the Deputy Superintendent today announced Autumn Hoffman, a former world language teacher, has been named the content specialist for ESOL and World Languages. Hoffman was previously a vice principal at Maurice J. McDonough High School. Matthew Deegan, vice principal at Theodore G. Davis Middle School, will move to McDonough as a vice principal. Deegan, who has worked with middle and high school level students, will bring a diversified experience to McDonough, according to the deputy superintendent’s office. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is stronger with the help of its community partners. On Monday, June 26, the Community Bank of the Chesapeake and the Community Foundation of Southern Maryland each made donations to the school system to enhance education and extracurricular activities for students. The Community Bank of the Chesapeake donated $1,800 raised by its employees through the bank’s annual summer fundraising campaign. For a donation, employees can dress casually throughout the summer in the business’s polo shirts. A 2017 North Point High School graduate who spent three years in the Academy of Health Professions Science, Technology and Industry (STI) program, was put to the test recently when she responded to an accident scene, rendering aid to an injured driver. Alexis Marshall was celebrating her birthday at the National Harbor in late May and as she and her mother were driving home, a car coming in the opposite direction flipped over. “I have to get out,” Marshall told her mother, who was not happy about her 18-year-old’s insistence. “I was amazed,” Jeanell Thomas, Marshall’s mother, said. More than 50 campers took to the grounds of North Point High School stadium for the Kops & Kids Football Camp June 21 to 23. The camp is open to boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 10 and is in its fifth year. The three-day camp focuses on sportsmanship and bullying intolerance. While run by the school resource officer (SRO) unit of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, football players from Henry E. A total of 44 Charles County Public Schools students earned national awards in the Junior American Citizens Contest, sponsored by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). The organization includes a Junior American Citizens Committee, which supports contests for children that promote patriotic development. The Junior American Citizens Contest is open to students in grades prekindergarten through 12. Entries range from banners, poems and posters to short stories and stamp designs. Two Westlake High School teachers have been nominated for the National 2017-18 LifeChanger of the Year Award. The recognition, sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, honors and awards educators who work with kindergarten through 12th-grade students and who are making a difference in the lives of children. Graduating high school is a milestone, a time to look forward and a time to reflect. For some North Point High School graduates, they got to gaze back on their fourth-grade year thanks to Joe Coscia, a Piccowaxen Middle School math teacher. The Unified track and field teams from La Plata and Maurice J. McDonough high schools earned top honors among competing Maryland teams at the Special Olympics Interscholastic Unified Sports Track and Field Invitational held May 9-10 at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex. The La Plata team earned a first-place award, and the team from McDonough earned second place during competitions held May 9.
