More than 80 Charles County elementary student artists were celebrated at the 25th annual County First Bank art exhibit held earlier this month at Mary B. Neal Elementary School. Students from all 21 elementary schools, as well as area private schools, submitted entries to the show. This year’s theme was “Traditions” and participating schools were divided into two regions – North and South. Quiches and cheesecake, robotics and tic-tac-toe games, and clay hearts and lungs were among the topics of discussion yesterday as North Point High School career and technology education (CTE) students served as real-life examples of college and career readiness. All Charles County public schools and administrative offices will be closed on Nov. 25, 26 and 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Schools and offices reopen on Monday, Nov. 30. All school-based community centers are closed Nov. 26-27. The indoor pools at Henry E. Lackey and North Point high schools and the Donald M. Daniel Weiss, a mathematics teacher at Thomas Stone High School, was recently named the overall winner in the Tips and Tools for Back to School campaign sponsored by the Educational Systems Federal Credit Union (ESFCU). As part of the campaign, interested educators were asked to submit helpful ideas and tips they planned to use to start the school year. Six weekly winners were selected to receive a $100 Visa gift card to use for back to school shopping. The Board of Education honored five Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) employees during the Nov. 10 meeting for being the difference in the lives of children and their commitment to the school system. Honored were Pamela Batchelor, Kelly Elliton, Linda Holloman, Tynika Lytle and Katherine Schubbe. Batchelor is a fourth-grade teacher at J.C. Parks Elementary School and was selected for recognition by Parks Principal Thadine Wright for her commitment to students, helping new teachers and for serving as the school’s liaison for the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO). Honored were Hollis Lyon, fifth grade, Dr. James Craik Elementary School; Olivia Robinson, fifth grade, Malcolm Elementary School; Delaney Hinton, fifth grade, J.C. Parks Elementary School; Naseem Abujuma, eighth grade, Benjamin Stoddert Middle School; and Matthew Johnson, senior, St. Charles High School. Lyon was recognized in the area of career readiness for demonstrating leadership skills, responsibility and for motivating her peers to achieve success. The La Plata Business Association (LPBA) presented Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) a $10,000 check on Nov. 4 to support fine arts for students. The donation came from the proceeds of the association’s second annual Rocktoberfest 2015, a small-town rock music festival presented by the LPBA and produced by Island Music. The association also donated proceeds from its inaugural event in 2014 to the school system. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is launching a new approach this school year that combines science and history fair projects and demonstrations, as well as technology and engineering programs, into a showcase event called the History, Industry, Technology and Science (HITS) Expo. The Expo replaces the annual Science and History Fairs, generally held annually in the spring, and will also showcase several programs offered to CCPS students such as robotics, the computer science partnership with Code.org, and Project Lead the Way.
