Two Westlake High School 2015 graduates, Ricardo Cardoza and Darius Leftwitch, were selected for the Meyerhoff Scholars Program at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). The Meyerhoff Scholars Program is open to high-achieving high school seniors who have an interest in pursuing doctoral study in science or engineering, and who are interested in the advancement of minorities in science and related fields. Tamara Gordon, a social studies teacher at Westlake High School, was recently selected to participate in the Supreme Court Summer Institute later this month. The Institute is open to teachers in the fields of law-related and civic education, and sponsored by Street Law, Inc. and the Supreme Court Historical Society. During the Institute, participants study recent Supreme Court cases and learn innovative teaching methods to engage students. Speakers include Supreme Court lawyers, reporters, scholars and educators. Two Institutes are held in the summer annually, and only 30 participants are chosen to attend per session.
