Charger pride was rampant in the Convocation Center at North Point High School tonight as the Class of 2015 from Henry E. Lackey High School graduated. A total of 292 graduates were honored during the ceremony. The graduating class from Lackey is the smallest this year among Charles County’s six public high schools with seniors. Although Lackey’s Class of 2015 is smaller in numbers, seniors were offered more than $7.1 million in scholarships. Maurice J. McDonough High School staff, along with school system officials and county dignitaries, conferred diplomas to 335 seniors in a graduation ceremony this afternoon. Senior class president Alexandria Jones provided greetings on behalf of the McDonough Class of 2015 to guests in attendance. Thomas Stone High School staff, along with several school system officials and county dignitaries, conferred diplomas to 307 seniors in a graduation ceremony this afternoon. Stone’s ceremony was led by Vice Principal Ryan Erickson, who served as the administrator for the Class of 2015. Charles County Public Schools kicked off its 2015 high school graduation ceremonies by saying farewell to 383 La Plata High School seniors this morning. La Plata’s 8:30 a.m. ceremony started with performances from the school’s symphonic band and a welcome of guests from senior class president Ryan Burton. In his opening comments, Burton called his classmates “resilient” and said he and his peers were all destined for greatness. Charles County Public Schools will honor 2,174 seniors on May 29 and May 30 during graduation ceremonies for six high schools in the Convocation Center at North Point High School. Students in the Class of 2015 were offered more than $62 million in scholarship offers, which is an increase of about $7 million from last year. Valedictorians and salutatorians were announced earlier this week. These positions are determined by students’ grade-point averages and represent the top academic achievers at each high school. The Student Member to the Board of Education of Charles County for the 2015-16 school year was recently chosen from among student leaders at Charles County’s seven public high schools. Pearson Benson, a rising junior at Westlake High School, will represent Charles County Public Schools students as the Student Board Member. He will be sworn in to his position at the Board of Education’s June 9 meeting. Student candidates interested in being considered for the position are required to submit an essay regarding a student concern and possible solution. Six Charles County Public Schools teams competed at the global Destination Imagination (DI) tournament held May 19-23 in Knoxville, Tennessee, and one team placed among the top 10 schools in their challenge. The Martin Neon Improv-ers team from T.C. Martin Elementary School earned an eighth-place award out of 77 elementary school teams that competed in the challenge, The Improv Games. Team members include Martin third graders Autumn Forsythe, Madelyn Wilson, Lillie Wright, Peyton Lauterborn and Kindcade Burroughs, and fifth grader Sarah Thacker.
