Malcolm Elementary School will open tomorrow, Monday, March 30, for a full day of instruction. Maintenance staff worked over the weekend to have a 6,000-gallon tanker connected to Malcolm in order to pump water to the school. Additionally, staff has supplied Malcolm with bottled water and cups for drinking water. The school system is working to have a contractor drill a new well as soon as possible. J.C. Parks Elementary School was recently named one of only two Maryland schools nominated for the U.S. Department of Education’s 2015 Green Ribbon Schools (GRS) Award. Parks was chosen by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) as a national nominee. Registration for the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) three-year-old program begins Monday, April 13 at county Title I elementary schools. Interested parents must schedule an appointment at their child’s zoned elementary school to complete the application process for the 2015-16 school year. Applications will be accepted by appointment only, and CCPS is no longer registering children in the three-year-old program on a first come, first serve basis. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has expanded its instructional programs to offer high school students additional opportunities to complete the financial literacy graduation requirement. All high school students must complete a one-credit course in financial literacy to graduate. Students can complete the course as a sophomore, junior or senior, but the course takes the place of an elective or other class on their schedule. The expansion of opportunities to complete the financial literacy course requirement provides students with additional schedule flexibility. Graduation ceremonies for high school seniors in the Charles County Public Schools Class of 2015 are planned for May 29-30 at the Convocation Center at North Point High School in Waldorf. Ceremonies for La Plata, Thomas Stone and Westlake high schools will be held on Friday, May 29. Seniors from North Point, Maurice J. McDonough and Henry E. Student actors in Charles County’s seven public high schools are preparing for spring plays, which begin this month. The following is a list of school plays, ticket and contact information for each high school. Maurice J. McDonough and Thomas Stone high schools are presenting their spring productions on March 19-21. More than 800 Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students competed in the regional Destination Imagination competition held Saturday, March 14, at North Point High School. Forty-eight teams advance to the state-level competition, scheduled for April 18 at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. More than 150 teams from Charles County public elementary, middle and high schools, and regional private schools, competed to solve one of six problems in the long-term academic event that challenges students to work together to apply creativity, critical thinking skills and unique talents. The Board of Education of Charles County has appointed Joseph Cormier of Waldorf to serve on the Board of Education Ethics Panel. He replaces a member who resigned due to an employment conflict. The panel is serving a four-year term that ends in June 2018. Cormier joins panel members William Olmstead, a La Plata attorney, James Cornette of La Plata, Theresa Everette of Waldorf and Jessie Morris of Waldorf. Cormier is a veteran and serves as the president of both the Arthur Middleton Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and the Charles County Special Education Citizens Advisory Committee (SECAC).
