Due to recent weather-related school closings, Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has changed some calendar dates for next week. Interim reports for students will now be issued on Wednesday, March 4. The window for post-test assessments has been extended to Monday, March 2. Schools may also postpone the start of PARCC, Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, testing to March 4. Staring this school year, PARCC assessments replace the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) exams in reading and math, and the High School Assessments (HSA) in English II and Algebra I. The Board of Education recently passed its fiscal year 2016 budget proposal channeling funding increases to employee salaries, the addition of a senior class at St. Charles High School and new instructional programs. The Board voted earlier this month to approve an operating budget request of $353.6 million, an 8 percent or $26.3 million increase over FY 2015. The budget proposes a $25.6 million or 15.8 percent increase from the county and anticipates reductions to the state’s Geographic Cost of Education Index (GCEI) as proposed in Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s budget. Twenty-two Charles County Public Schools students recently advanced to the national level of competition in the National Junior American Citizens Contest, sponsored by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). The organization includes a Junior American Citizens Committee, which supports contests for children that promote patriotic development. The Junior American Citizens Contest is open to students in grades prekindergarten through 12, and entries range from banners, poems and posters to short stories and stamp designs. Evangeline Gilmer, a sixth grader at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School, was recently named a state-level winner in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) American History Essay Contest. The contest was open to students in grades five through eight and featured the theme of, “A Child’s Journey Through Ellis Island” to highlight the upcoming 125th anniversary of Ellis Island as an immigration station. In their essays, students were tasked with referencing sources about Ellis Island processing procedures, and to describe a fictional experience traveling through Ellis Island. Three Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) teams placed among competing schools in their divisions at the Special Olympics Maryland 2015 Interscholastic Unified Indoor Bocce State High School Championship event held Feb. 11 at Hagerstown Community College. Teams from Henry E. Lackey, La Plata and Maurice J. McDonough high schools participated in the event, which was separated into four levels of competition – divisions one through four. Craig Storm, a seventh-grade student at Mattawoman Middle School, earned the title of top speller at the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) 37th annual Spelling Bee held Feb. 20 at John Hanson Middle School. Storm spelled the word “pernicious,” which means something that can cause great harm or damage, or is highly injurious or destructive, to earn first place. As the Charles County winner, Storm advances to the 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee scheduled for May 24-30 in Washington D.C. On Feb. 18, Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) said Konnichiwa to more than 30 Japanese education students as part of the school system’s partnership with Bunkyo University.
