The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) recently announced the Maryland Parent Involvement Matters Award (PIMA) program for 2015. The annual award recognizes parents and guardians whose contributions have led to improvements in Maryland public schools. The award was created by MSDE to highlight the positive impact parents have on public schools and to encourage parental involvement. MSDE is now accepting applications for award nominees. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is accepting nominations for its 2015 Principal of the Year and the Washington Post Distinguished Educational Leadership Award (DELA). The annual award honors exemplary principals and recognizes those who go beyond the day-to-day demands of their position to create an exceptional educational environment. Teachers, students, former students, parents, administrators, or community members may submit nominations. North Point High School hosted its first Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Friday, Oct. 31 and honored A.K. Johnson, director of student activities for Charles County Public Schools, and Robyn Parks, a 2010 North Point graduate and former Charles County student athlete.  During the ceremony, both Johnson and Parks were honored with plaques of recognition that will hang in the athletics hallway at the school. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) highlighted Veterans Day on Tuesday, Nov. 11 as part of American Freedom Week. The school system celebrates American Freedom Week during the week that Veterans Day falls and schools give special recognition to those who serve the country and those who gave their lives to preserve America’s liberty. The annual award honors exemplary teachers who demonstrate excellence in teaching and outstanding leadership, encourage creative and quality instruction, and contribute in a substantive way to the improvement of education. The Board of Education honored five Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) employees during the Nov. 11 Board meeting, including Erin Berfield, Danielle Carpenter, Latisha Chase, Melissa Gross and Jane Pilkerton. Berfield is a music teacher at Malcom Elementary School. She was recognized for consistently delivering quality instruction to her students in music. Honored were Nicholas Long, fifth grade, Dr. James Craik Elementary School; Amir Moore, fifth grade, Malcolm Elementary School; Morgan Martin, fifth grade, J.C. Parks Elementary School; Devyn Thompson, eighth grade, Benjamin Stoddert Middle School; and Jeanne Franchesca Dela Cruz, junior, St. Charles High School. The La Plata High School varsity football team was recently chosen to present a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider located at Arlington National Cemetery. The team traveled to Arlington, Va. on Monday, Oct. 20 to participate in a special ceremony to honor service men and women. La Plata seniors BJ Carter and Wyatt Potter, along with junior Tavian Brake and La Plata Head Football Coach Seth Pettit, placed the wreath at the Tomb.
