Tuesday, July 29 was no ordinary day of teaching and learning for Charles County Public Schools (CCPS). At St. Charles High School, students and teachers had an opportunity to learn from Dr. Leroy Chiao, a former astronaut who has traveled to space on four different missions. Chiao was the keynote speaker at the annual Space Foundation Educational Exchange, but was also at St. Charles for another special event – one that has been a longtime coming for Charles County Public Schools. The Board of Education yesterday approved several administrative appointments for the 2014-15 school year. They include one principal appointment, three vice principal appointments and two positions at the Jesse L. Starkey Administration Building. Christienne Warren was appointed principal at Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School. Warren previously served as principal at Coldstream Park Elementary Middle School with Baltimore City Public Schools for two years. She transitioned to Dr. Brown as the school’s acting principal earlier this month. Mary Long was named vice principal at J.P. Ryon Elementary School. She previously taught second grade at William B. Classes for students at the Lifelong Learning Center will continue at John Hanson Middle School for the remainder of the summer session. The summer session for students enrolled in programs at the Lifelong Learning Center ends on Friday, Aug. 15. Hanson is located next to the center, which was damaged last Wednesday during a fire. Students should enter Hanson through the main doors and will be directed to specific classroom areas. A fire at the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Lifelong Learning Center in Waldorf destroyed the center’s classroom and caused cancellation of adult education classes on July 11 and 12. No one was injured in the fire. Classes for students at the Lifelong Learning Center will resume at regular times on Monday, July 14, at John Hanson Middle School, which is located next to the center. School officials canceled adult education classes on Thursday, July 10, and Friday, July 11. During the transition from July 14-18, the Lifelong Learning Center is unable to offer childcare. Superintendent Kimberly Hill has named Christienne C. Warren as acting principal at Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School in Waldorf. Warren replaces Principal Darryl Evans who announced his resignation last week. Warren has served as principal at Coldstream Park Elementary Middle School in Baltimore, which serves prekindergarten through grade 8, since 2012. Warren started her education career in 2004 as a fifth-grade teacher and also served as a curriculum writer, professional development facilitator, summer instructor and instructional support teacher before being promoted in 2009 as assistant principal and academic dean at Friendship Academy of Engineering and Technology in Baltimore. Erika Bowman, a freshman at St. Charles High School, is the overall winner of the 2014 Charles County Fair art contest. Her artwork will be displayed as the cover of the upcoming Charles County Fair Guide. She was chosen last month as this year’s winner by the Charles County Fair Board and Charles County Public Schools. Two Charles County Public Schools Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) teams earned top honors at the MESA USA National Engineering Design Competition held June 20-22 in Portland, Oregon. A team from Henry E. Lackey High School received third place overall among competing teams at the high school level, and a John Hanson Middle School team received fourth place overall at the middle school level.
