More Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students are graduating and meeting the academic challenges of the state High School Assessments (HSA), according to data released today by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Countywide, the class of 2013 met reading, mathematics, biology and graduation targets for the all students category. Mathematics, which is based on algebra scores, increased to 93.56 in 2013 from 92.45 proficiency in 2012. English scores were 92.28 in 2013, up from 90.2 in 2012. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) hosted its annual Fall Chess Tournament Oct. 26, at Thomas Stone High School. The tournament is sponsored by the school system’s gifted education department and is open to any county resident in grades kindergarten through 12. More than 120 students competed in five grade-level divisions. The tournament follows a Swiss-style format in which each student plays four games. Trophies were awarded for first and second places, and medals were given to students placing in the division. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has launched a new website offering students and parents information regarding the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The website provides multiple resources including videos, a slideshow and roadmaps on CCSS to ensure a smooth transition. Maryland, along with 47 other states, adopted the CCSS for grades K-12 in 2010 and the standards have been implemented for the 2013-2014 school year. Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School’s history club recently went on a trip to Gettysburg, PA to visit the site of the High Water Battle. After weeks of studying about the Civil War, the history club students were able to apply their knowledge from history club meetings and see the battle site first-hand. The club gives students at Dr. Mudd the opportunity to learn about history in an interactive way. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) celebrated National School Bus Safety Week Oct. 21-25. The theme “Stand Back from the Yellow and Black” highlights the importance of obeying traffic laws in regards to stopped school buses. CCPS school buses transport more than 23,000 students to school every day on 276 school buses. On Oct. 11, a mad scientist made bubbles with dry ice and gave carbon dioxide baths to Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School’s youngest students. These students also used the opportunity to show 12 educational specialists from China how Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) takes hands-on learning to a new level. The Judith P. Hoyer Early Child Care and Family Education Centers, also known as the Judy Centers, coordinated the activity for more than 50 students enrolled in the program at Dr. Mudd. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) six public high schools are preparing for fall plays, which begin this weekend. The following is a list of schools plays, ticket and contact information for each high school. La Plata High School will present “Midsummer Jersey,” at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 24-26, in the school auditorium. The play is a comedic retelling of Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” set on New Jersey’s Seaside boardwalk. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Lackey and North Point high schools indoor pools will follow a modified schedule. The indoor pools are open 1-9 p.m. on Nov. 11.
