Offering Online High School Courses Using a Virtual Learning Approach

Virtual Academy is an educational program that is offered through the Charles County Public Schools using staff located at the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center and is an extension of the services offered through the regular high school program. It provides online high school courses through the digital platform APEX Learning. Credit is awarded upon satisfactory completion of subject requirements. Students who enroll in Virtual Academy are self -motivated independent learners who have basic computer skills.

Application Information
Applications are closed for the 2021-22 school year. Late applications will not be accepted.


Enrollment
Virtual Academy is expanding and now will service students in grades 9 - 12.

Students must apply and meet minimum criteria to be accepted into the Virtual Academy. Enrollment is not guaranteed. Students interested in this program may include but are not limited to:

  • Juniors who wish to graduate early.
  • Seniors who need four or fewer credits.
  • Students with school anxiety.
  • Students who require a flexible schedule.
  • Any student who prefers a nontraditional school setting.


The following is the minimum criteria for acceptance into the Virtual Academy. Data will be collected from SY 20/21.

  • 15 or fewer absences
  • At least a 2.0 GPA.


Virtual Academy Requirements

  • Full-time Virtual Academy students must agree to remain for the completion of the current school year. They may transfer back to their home schools the following school year.
  • Students attending Virtual Academy fulltime are not eligible to participate in sports or extracurricular activities at their home schools.
  • Students must attend two, 45-minute live classes through Zoom in Synergy, four days per week.
  • Students are expected to work on course assignments through APEX learning for a total of 5 hours per day, four days per week.
  • Students with an Individualized Educational Program (IEP), 504 plan, or English Learners (ELs) plan may be required to attend in-person learning at the Virtual Academy.
  • All other students will work from a remote location.
  • Students will need to provide transportation to their home schools for all State assessments.


Graduation
Students meeting all the requirements for the Maryland High School Diploma will receive their diploma through their home schools at the completion of the current school year, regardless of when the student completes their required courses. It is the student’s responsibility to stay in contact with their home school's counselor for requirements and deadlines. Students will graduate with their home schools.


Virtual Academy is open Monday through Thursday, 7:45 A.M. - 3:45 P.M.
Virtual Academy is closed on Fridays, and when Charles County Public Schools are closed. On early dismissal days, the Virtual Academy will close at 1:45 P.M. The Virtual Academy will open at 10:00 A.M. on two-hour delays.

Parent Contact
Progress reports will be issued corresponding to the school system’s distribution schedule for interim reports and report cards through the student’s home school via StudentVue and ParentVue.
