The Office of Equity and Diversity is dedicated to ensuring that Charles County Public Schools is an educational environment unhindered by bias or discrimination, where individuals of all backgrounds and experiences are welcomed, included, and encouraged to succeed. Our office strives to implement equitable opportunities to close the achievement gaps and infuse learning opportunities for students and staff. Diverse instructional content is provided to schools to create culturally affirming environments where openness, inclusiveness, respect, and appreciation for diversity of thought, values, cultures, learning styles, and actions flourish. This department works to create an equitable, hospitable, safe, and inclusive environment for our students, families, and staff.
Equity Training
Equity training is a requirement for all Charles County Public Schools employees. This training provides employees with opportunities for rich and deep conversations about equity and diversity. It also allows employees to gain an understanding of the diverse student population of Charles County and helps employees implement best practices to increase student achievement.
AVID – Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID is a college readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and persist in four-year colleges and universities. The mission of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID schools support students through academic elective classes and support teachers through professional development to increase student overall development for post-secondary success. Charles County has 10 AVID schools – 6 middle schools and 4 high schools.
Bunkyo University Teacher Education Program
Charles County Public Schools has an ongoing partnership with Bunkyo University in Japan. This partnership allows students in the education program from Bunkyo University to actively participate in American education. The Bunkyo University students work with school-based instructional staff to observe and conduct lessons to our students. They also provide Japanese cultural experiences to enhance our students’ learning.
Maryland MESA
Maryland MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement) is a structured pre-college program dedicated to support and develop the interests, skills, and abilities of elementary, middle, and high school students in science, technology, engineering, and math. This program targets traditionally underrepresented students, specifically minorities and females. MESA helps develop leadership skills, academic performance, collaborative teamwork, and effective competition.
Job Shadowing
Job Shadow Day is a national initiative that gives students a firsthand look at the world of work. Job shadowing can take many forms, but typically it encompasses a half-day visit by a student to a place of work. The student should have an opportunity to tour the site, “shadow” an employee for at least two-hours, and participate in workplace activities.
