Glossary of Terms
GLOSSARY – TERMS, GROUPS, PROCEDURES
We hope this "glossary" will give you a quick, snapshot look at key terms used frequently at our school by various groups.
Our newsletter often provides additional information. Most importantly, when and if you have a question, do not hesitate to call for additional information.
DI – Destination Imagination – An enrichment opportunity for students to compete in teams – try to solve problems and be creative. Volunteer coaches are always needed.
EA – Emotional Adjustment – a special education term – Placement for children with emotional/behavioral concern that impacts students learning.
EACC – Professional teacher organization – Education Association of Charles County affiliated with MSTA/NEA.
EIIP – Early Identification and Intervention program – A state-mandated program to help identify students in grades K-3 that may have or do have learning problems and to assist teachers in educating those students. There are three components: Screening, Review Evaluation, and Intervention.
IEP – Individualized Educational Plan – A process to determine the need for Special Education services.
ILT – Instructional Leadership Team – A team of resource teachers and administrators who assist the classroom teachers in their daily instruction.
LEA – Local Education Agency – Term used by State.
LEA – Language Experience Approach (to reading) – Using student's own language to create stories and develop reading strategies.
MSA – Maryland State Assessment – Given to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.
MSTA – Maryland State Teachers Association
NEA – National Education Association
PAC – Parent Advisory Committee – Parent representatives per grade level and Special Areas meet once a month to share parent concerns and/or accomplishments.
PPW – Pupil Personnel Worker – Handles student-related issues.
PTO – Parent-Teacher Organization – Assists with school/student/family activities. It also provides additional fund raising support
SIP – School Improvement Plan – Plan developed by staff to address needs of our school.
SST – Student Study Team consists of principal/vice-principal, counselor, pupil personnel worker, psychologist, speech therapist, school nurse and referring staff member. It may also include appropriate parent, other teachers, social service workers, juvenile service personnel, health department staff members, family counselors, and other support personnel. The S.S.T is the screening/management team for individual students who are involved in mainstream education and have a need for support services. It serves as a vehicle for facilitating positive change and/or appropriate referrals. The team is knowledgeable about a continuum of options for students and families who need additional assistance. It monitors outcomes of interventions and referrals for all student cases.
