A Message From The Superintendent

Mr. James E. Richmond

By most measures, Charles County has one of the best public education systems in Maryland and the nation. SAT scores that lead state and national averages, high Advanced Placement class enrollments and nationally recognized minority achievement gains demonstrate the school system's continuing success.

Charles County ranks in the top third of Washington, D.C. area schools recognized for success in challenging students to take rigorous AP classes. The system offers gifted education programs, before- and after-school programs, and a wide range of fine arts, athletics, clubs, and student organizations.

Charles County Public Schools has also been recognized by technology giants across the nation for its vision and action to provide a world-class education that integrates the latest technology in all of its classrooms.  CISCO recently presented the school system with the 21st Century School Award to recognize North Point High School for Science, Technology and Industry as a 21st century model school. CISCO also presented Superintendent of Schools James E. Richmond with an Outstanding Vision and Leadership Award in May.

Located 25 miles south of Washington, D.C., Charles County is considered part of the Capital city's metropolitan area. Charles County has a population of 133,049 and is located in Southern Maryland. There are 34 schools and eight centers that service the system's 26,900-student population. Charles County is one of the fastest growing school systems in Maryland. Future plans include the building of one new school bi-annually for the next 16 years. This year, we opened our eighth middle school, Theodore G. Davis Middle School. Construction has already begun on the next elementary school in the county's aggressive efforts to reduce overcrowding.

We measure one student at a time. And, our students are succeeding. Almost 80 percent of our students pursue some type of post-graduation education. The class of 2007 was offered more than $25 million in college scholarships, which is a good indicator of academic excellence.

We hope to build on last year's successes. We invite all parents to work with us to provide children with opportunities for academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility. We hope to see you at open houses, parent nights, concerts, plays, teacher conferences and sporting events. When your children see you involved with their school and activities, they get the message that education is important.

As always, we welcome your comments and questions. Feel free to email me at boardmail@ccboe.com.
