 Physical Education Department

The Physical Education course is an essential part of the total education of the individual. Students will experience a variety of activities, providing them with an acceptable level of fitness, a thorough knowledge of related content, and sufficient physical skill to enjoy participation. Through these activities, students should acquire responsible social behaviors, awareness and acceptance of self, and an understanding of the relationship between physical activity and maintaining lifetime fitness.

Adaptive Physical Education is a program available to students on recommendation of the Individual Education Plan team. It is a ½ credit course in which individual goals and objectives are developed through the IEP process, which reflect a student's present level of performance.

Advanced Physical Education is a three-course program that emphasizes the development of intermediate to advanced skills in a variety of individual, team, and lifetime sports. Each 1 credit course is open on a coeducational basis and is structure to meet the interest and needs of students.

The Introduction to Weight Training is a ½ credit course, open to all 9th grade students, which deals with weight training techniques and the lifetime application of weight training as it relates to personal fitness.

Weight Training and Conditioning is a three-course program that focuses on weight training techniques, muscle physiology, and how the progressive resistance exercises can be used to develop and condition the human body. Students will take part in running and other movement exercises, which are designed to improve total fitness.

Health is a ½ credit course that focuses on the prevention of health problems and the development of behaviors that lead to a healthful lifestyle. It is a required course that teaches knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors that enable the students to make responsible decisions about their health. Topics of study include nutrition, fitness, drug education, mental health, consumer health, first aid & safety, disease prevention & control, and family life & human sexuality.
