DepartmentsSocial StudiesThe Charles County Middle School Social Studies Essential Curriculum is based on the Maryland Social Studies State Voluntary Curriculum and Social Studies Content Standards. Topics covered include World History, Contemporary World Cultures and Geography, and United States History. Sixth grade students study world history from prehistoric times to the Renaissance. Their assigned textbook is A Journey in Time. Seventh graders continue their global studies by examining contemporary world cultures and geography. Their assigned textbook is World Cultures and Geography. The focus for eighth graders is American history. Students begin the year reviewing the early colonial settlement of America and the American Revolution. They study major events leading to the Civil War and end the year by studying the Reconstruction Period. The assigned eighth grade textbook is American History: Beginnings through Reconstruction. In all grade levels, teachers work to have students understand the many elements of our culture, which are deeply rooted in the past. Students are asked to make meaningful connections with the past and present. The Charles County Social Studies Essential Curriculum is based on the Content Standards of the Voluntary State Curriculum for social studies. This school year promises to be an exciting and productive one for the Social Studies Department. In December students will participate in the National Geographic Geography Bee. Students can also participate in the Black Saga Competition. The History Day Exhibition is scheduled for February (school level) and March (county level). Eighth graders will also be treated to a "Living History" Civil War presentation by several Civil War Re-enactors in the spring. We are pleased to have the following teachers return to Milton Somers:
