Art is offered to all three grades at Milton Somers.

Students in the sixth grade should expect to experience the following skill builders: drawing, ceramics, printmaking, graphic and textile design, and art history. Many of the projects done in the 6th grade classes are taught in conjunction with the social studies curriculum. This provides the students with a comprehensive understanding of man's history: from technology to the advancement in the arts in each period by linking it to the math and sciences, and literature.

Students in the seventh grade should expect to continue honing their skills in the areas of drawing and the elements of design, color applications, ceramics, linoleum block printmaking, and stained glass. Where appropriate, the curriculum is enhanced with projects designed to provide a greater understanding of cultures and civilizations studied in the social studies classes.

Eighth grade art students embark on a semester of art techniques that will enable them to move into high school art with confidence. Students will experience drawing, painting including watercolor, tempera and acrylics, quilting, and architecture and participate in a variety of contests that gives them exposure to the field of competitive art. Students are also expected to keep and develop a sketchbook.

If you have any questions regarding the art program you should contact your child's teacher or the department chairperson, Elizabeth Wanzer or call 301-934-4664.
