Media & Technology

Milton M. Somers Middle School is fully networked and each classroom has an LCD projector cart. All classrooms have up-to-date computers; as well as the media center with 11 computers for student use. The Media Center is open from 7:15-2:40 PM Monday through Friday. Students generally visit the media center for book checkout and mini-lessons on information seeking skills bi-weekly with their Language Arts Classes. Students wishing to do independent research may come to the media center with a pass from class or during their lunch period. For students wishing to stay after school, the student must bring a note from home at least the day before.

We also have two stationary computer labs. The computer lab located by the Media Center is used as a Computer Skills Lab one period and is available for teachers to use with their classes the remainder of the day. The Computer Skills Lab taught by Ms. Mack is for students choosing Computer Education as an elective course. In 6th and 7th grade, topics covered are computer history and basic operation, introductory keyboarding and a beginning level of Microsoft Word. The curriculum for 8th grade is a review of basic computer use and keyboarding, as well as, Intermediate Microsoft Word, Beginning Microsoft Excel and Intermediate PowerPoint. Finally, we have four mobile wireless laptop labs that can be checked out by teachers for classroom use. Another one is used as part of our pre-engineering course.
