Departments

Math

Content Standards of the Voluntary State Curriculum for math. Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at Milton Somers are instructed in the following areas:

  • Algebra and Pattern Functions
  • Geometry
  • Measurement
  • Statistics
  • Probability
  • Number Relationships and Computation
  • Process of Mathematics

Instruction incorporates authentic applications of math skills, as well as test preparation for the county and state assessments. The awarding of a high school diploma is contingent on students receiving a passing score on an Algebra assessment. We believe that a strong middle school math program will assist students in achieving their goals in high school. All math classes, with the exception of Algebra II, will be eighty-four minutes each day. This will allow for additional practice and instruction in math and allow more real life problem solving.. For those who never get enough of math, our math department offers extra-curricular activities. A pre- engineering class, MESA (Math, Engineering and Science Achievement) and Math Counts are available to students who want additional math challenges.

Pre-engineering delves into the concepts of engineering as they apply to the state curriculum.
MESA is an after school program to develop math and science applications through investigation and competition.
Math Counts is a team of students that practice after school to compete against other middle school students within the county and state.
