Awards and Achievements2009-10 Student AccomplishmentsThroughout the school year, we will be updating this page with the many achievements our students receive. Please check back often! Congratulations to the following students who auditioned and were selected for All-County Choir: 6th graders, Hannah Gilley and Naomi Hoglund, 7th graders, Faith Hawkins, Joshua Hilson, Haley Roddy, and Chloe Zattau, and 8th graders, Desiree Borges, Cassidy McCloy, and Blake Ross. A special thanks to Ms. Nodianos for continuing success while Ms. Liston is out. Congratulations are also in order for the following students who were selected for All-County Orchestra: 7th graders, Shannon Haley, Shelby Harold, Jessica Lee, Olivia Litten, Ashley Luton, Hailey Price, and Demisha White, and 8th graders, Kirsten Greenwaldt and Emili Kober. Thank you Ms. Mickey for preparing these students. Milton Somers had their best year ever at the Charles County Fair. We are very proud of every student who allowed their projects, reports and exhibits to be submitted to the fair and compete with the other middle schools, both public and private, in the county. Congratulations to the following students: Students who earned a BLUE ribbon and first place award are: ART- Baylen Caldwell, Michael Davis, D'Armae Griffin, Emily Hughes, Sollee Kim, Mathew Jackson, Paige Mattheu, Julia Moul, Robert Mullins, Maddie Phoenix, Melody Webb and Chris Williams; LANGUAGE ARTS- Nate Crispell, John Radtke, Ms. Harris' 7th grade class and Ms. Wanzer's 7th grade class. MUSIC- Allison Drazba; SCIENCE- Jessica Lee, Group-Andre Burton, James Kushner and Troy Konzen, Group- Tyler Moyer and Alex Larson; P.E./HEALTH- Brandon Garner, D'Armae Griffin, Danielle Murphy (2) and Candice Wedding (2). TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION- Erik Knower; SOCIAL STUDIES- Ryan Burton and Ms. Wanzer's 6th grade class; MATH- Group- Emily Guare, Destini Morris and Rachel Spalding; Sollee Kim was also the county winner for the 8th grade in the fair cover design contest. Received a RED ribbon and second place are: ART- Brandon Garner, Alex Hall, Danielle Murphy, Sara Newman, Victoria Strough, Noah Taitano and Alice Whitney; LANGUAGE ARTS- Derek Lane, Ms. Kolniak's 6th grade class and Ms. Wanzer's 7th grade class; MUSIC- John Radtke; FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE- Matthew Morris and Samantha Spalding; MATH- Group- Sarah Cheney, Sydney Clement, Julia Huber and Allison Norris; SCIENCE- Emily Shatley and Colton Simpson; TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION- Monica Molvin and Christine VanSickler; FOREIGN LANGUAGE- Courtney Nelson; Students who won a WHITE or third place award are: ART- Austin Ball, Nate Crispell, Morgan Tippett and Candice Wedding; LANGUAGE ARTS- Kelly Martin, Anastasia Saldana and Ms. Smith's 6th grade class. MUSIC- Magen Stempin; SCIENCE- Austin Mitchell; MATH- Ms. Johnson's 6th grade class; TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION- Jessi Langley and Maddie Phoenix; P.E./HEALTH- Ms. Wanzer's 7th grade class; Received HONORABLE MENTION for their art work: Tommy DeLoache, Harshal Jariwala and Zach Olmsted. Congratulations to these smart, talented students and their sponsoring teachers. Congratulations to the following students who successfully auditioned for the 2009-2010 All-County Band: 7th graders, Jackson Brawner, Catie O'Donnell, and Nicholas Wiegand, and 8th graders, Jeremiah Dent, Jared Toney, and Katelyn Turner. Congratulations to 6th grader, Franklin Olmsted, who placed first in the Fall Chess Tournament for grades 5-6 and 8th grader, Kevin Kreilick, who placed 3rd in the 7-8 grade division. Franklin Olmsted also placed first in the 6-8 grade Tri-County Chess Tournament. Way to go! Congratulations to the following art students: Ahniyah Ali, Austin Barnhart, Katie Burroughs, Karissa Coates, Caroline Dinh, Meagan Nielsen, Carson Painter, Katie Phoenix, Vicky Powers, and Rayna Wallace. Their art work was selected to represent the Somers' art program at the First Regional Art Exposition at the Starkey Building from November 4, 2009 thru February 25, 2010. The exhibit is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Congratulations and good luck to Ahniyah Ali, Meagan Nielsen, and Rayna Wallace. These young ladies will be Somers' representatives in the Lion's Club Peace Poster contest. All three posters are outstanding and already winners with us! Congratulations to our students who competed in the County Math Counts competition. Our "A Team," Sydney Fuller, Jonathan King, Daryl Lakner, and Matt Tyo, came in 1st place. Our "B Team," Paige Hood, Maggie Lavery, Steven Marsh, and Colin McNulty, came in 2nd place. Alternates were Jake Lind and Eric Matteson.
