2008-09 Student Accomplishments

Throughout the school year, we will be updating this page with the many achievements our students receive. Please check back often!

Congratulations to Nathan Radtke, an 8th grade student, for his selection as a semifinalist of the Society for Science & the Public's 2008 Middle School Program - America's premiere science competition for middle school students. Nathan was selected from 1,943 entrants representing 253 affiliated science fairs across the United States and Puerto Rico.

Congratulations to Julia Huber for being selected as the 7th grade winner of the 2008 Charles County Fair Catalog Cover Contest. Julia was in Mrs. Wanzer's art class last year.

Congratulations to Connor Magrogan for being selected as the 6th grade winner of the 2008 Charles County Fair Catalog Cover Contest. One student throughout the county was chosen for each grade. Connor was also the overall winner of the contest and his artwork is on this year's catalog.

The following students entered different types of art work into the Charles County Fair. Thank you Mr. Ivanac and Mrs. Wanzer for supporting these nominations and the artistic talents of our students.

Blue Ribbon - First Place: Christy Percosky, James Kilinski, Brandon Garner, Matthew Jackson, Candice Wedding, Ms. McVerry's class, Ms. Johnson's class, Ms. Shelton's class, Taylor McLaurin, Brittany Cobey, Symora Thomas, Derreck Johnson, Ms. Wanzer's 7th grade classes, Ms. Wanzer's 6th grade classes, Ms. Mack's class, Logan Rottman, Alexander Dunlap, Anthony Cable, Elizabeth Colburn, Darmae Griffin, Ms. Watter's math class, and Brandon Litten.

Red Ribbon - Second Place: Shane Simpson, Ms. Johnson's class, Alice Whitney, Robert Mullins, Nicholas Adriani, Kevin Lopez, William Escobar, Ms. Wanzer's 7th grade classes, Allison Drazba, Darmae Griffin, Kourtney Wiley, and Andrew Olmsted.

White Ribbon - Third Place: Hope Steffens, Austin Edelen, William Pikulski, Sarah Newman, Josh Martin, and Sydney Clement.

Honorable Mention: Carly Arnold, Brittany Cobey, Ms. Beck's 8-2, 8-3, and 8-4 classes, Daniel Holter, Parita Patel, Casey Rollins, and Devon Dyson.

Congratulations to 8th grader, Tyler Moyer, for being selected by Charles County Public Schools as an exemplary student. Tyler is being recognized at the October Board of Education meeting.

Charles County Public Schools hosted the Fall Chess Tournament on October 11th.  Congratulations to Antonio Miguelez, a 6th grader, for placing 3rd in the 5th & 6th grade division.  We also want to congratulate three  other Somers' students for winning in the 7th & 8th grade division; Alex Smith placed 1st, Nate Hoxie placed 2nd, and Kevin Kreilick placed 3rd. 

Congratulations to Ms. Liston and members of the chorus program who participated in the All County Chorus auditions on October 14th. Somers will be represented by the following chorus members: 6th graders - Joshua Hilson, Alyssa Keats, Haley Roddey, and Chloe Zattau; 7th graders - Michelle Dickerson, Paige Hood, and Blake Ross; 8th graders - Deana Gilley, Donavan Hart, Ina Reyes, and Bethany Righter.

Congratulations to Mrs. Mickey and members of the orchestra program who auditioned for All County Orchestra on October 14th. Somers will be represented by the following orchestra members: 6th grade - Ashley Luton and Hailey Price; 7th grade - Amy Dawson, Kirsten Greenwaldt, Joseph Spoltore, and Magen Stempin; 8th grade - Erin Hudelson, Alex Smith, and Paige Wearmouth.

Congratulations to Mr. Hood and members of the band who were successful at the All County Band auditions on October 21st.  Representing Somers are the following 8th grade students: Sarah Cheney, Kenneth Fletcher, Alexander Hartline, Melissa Kret, Garrett Lundegard, and Allison Morey.

Congratulations to Sara Newman, a 7th grader from Ms. Wanzer's art class, who received 3rd place in the Superintendent's Holiday Card Contest.

Congratulations to the Milton Somers Math Counts A Team for taking 1st place in the county competition.  The A Team consisted of Alex Hartline, Harshal Jariwala, Bobby Keim, and Alex Smith.  Our B Team included Josh Harris, Faith Hawkins, Rusheme Richards, and Micheal Bongay. They represented our school quite well with a cumulative score of 26 points. Congratulations to both teams for your success at the county competition.

Congratulations to 7th grader, Austin Barnhart, for winning the Lions Club Peace Poster contest.  He won $100 and his poster will now represent the club at the district level competition.
