Message from the Principal
Welcome to General Smallwood Middle School- the Home of the Bulldogs! Our school was named in honor of General William Smallwood who served during the American Revolutionary War and later became governor of Maryland. The school was established in 1979.
Our current enrollment is 510. There are 255 girls and 255 boys. For the past three years we have operated on a modified block schedule. The core content classes have 90 minute blocks each day while physical education and related arts classes have 45 minute periods. The core academic classes are scheduled to meet the needs of all students including intervention services and enrichment opportunities. We provide a rigorous and relevant curriculum for all students!
The staff continues to place emphasis on delivering the standards of the Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC). Differentiated instruction, reading across content, data collection and analyses, as well as lesson planning have been essential components of the ongoing staff development this year. A variety of research – based texts and technology programs have been integrated into the staff training at GSMS. Instructional planning and professional development occur on a daily basis. These sessions are planned and implemented by our ILT (instructional leadership team).
Students participate in a variety of clubs and organizations:
MESA (math, science, engineering, technology), Math Counts, Black Saga, Spelling Bee, Geography Bee, Science & History Fairs, Chess, Destination Imagination, Saturday Enrichment Program, Builders Club, Principal's Advisory Council, Student Council, Gateway, Morning Announcements, FEA (Future Educators of America), SADD/SASS, Morning Fitness, Yearbook, National Junior Honor Society and Computer Mania at UMBC.
We have an active PTO and great parent involvement. Please join us as we Mobilize and Shift To Success –From Success To Significance—Our Only Option!
