PBIS - Positive Behavioral Interventions & Support
Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It was developed by Dr's. George Sugai and Robert Horner from the University of Oregon and evolved by many others. It is supported by the US Department of Education and is currently implemented in over 1,300 schools in the United States.
- PBIS is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school wide and classroom discipline systems.
- PBIS is built upon elements to central behavior management programs, including reinforcement of desirable behavior, use of tangible and social reinforcements, and clear and consistent responses to behavioral violations.
- School-based PBIS teams are supported by school system coaches, usually school psychologists, who have the expertise in functional behavioral assessment and system change.
Keith Grier, Director of Student Services, notes that Charles County Public Schools began implementation of the PBIS Program in 1999 and that the program has grown every year. Currently there are 30 schools participating in the implementation of PBIS. The PBIS program has had dramatic results
Twenty-seven Charles County public schools were honored by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) on Wednesday, July 30 2008, for their Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) programs. Schools are eligible for PBIS recognition awards if they have an active administration, have a PBIS team that meets monthly, have submitted required forms on time and have collected and reviewed program data and results. Schools are also evaluated on data showing improvement and achievement as a result of the program, and documentation supporting the implementation of PBIS activities in the school.
Each of these schools underwent an on-site visit by members of the Maryland PBIS leadership team. The schools were evaluated using the Systems Evaluation Tool (SET), Benchmarks Of Quality standards set by MSDE, interviews with schools staff and students, and an overall determination of how well the school implemented critical features of the program. MSDE awards PBIS schools with one of three awards: Green Ribbon, Banner or Exemplar awards. Exemplar is the highest award level.
