Charles County Public Schools requires all students entering the sixth and ninth grades to provide two current proofs of residency as a way to update school system records. Students entering the sixth and ninth grades are not officially registered for next year's classes until the proofs of residency are received.

Acceptable proofs of residency include:

  • Signed lease (with signatures of both parties)
  • Signed rental agreement (with signatures of both parties)
  • Current utility bill with name and address
  • Current telephone/cellular bill with name and address
  • Ratified purchase contract
  • Current car registration card
  • Most recent vehicle/property owner's insurance bill
  • Property tax bill
  • Property title record
  • Current paycheck with name and address
  • Current court document with name, date and home address
  • Recent Social Security check with name, date and home address
Proofs of residency must be presented to the school a student currently attends. Parents may present the two proofs of residency to the school office during normal business hours; send copies, not originals, to the school office in a sealed envelope with their child; or mail copies of the information to the school. The deadline for submitting the information is March 25.

Parents who have presented two proofs of residency this school year do not need to resubmit the information, unless they have moved.

If a fifth- or eight-grade student is attending school out-of-zone on a school change request, and a parent is requesting that the child attend a middle or high school in an out-of-zone school, a new school change request form must be submitted and approved by personnel in the office of student services. Contact Pat Cunniff, 301-392-7588, with questions about out-of-zone transfers.

"This residency check is an effort to ensure that our schools are serving Charles County residents, and that students are attending school in proper zones," Superintendent of Schools James E. Richmond said.
