Stone students join charity to collect donations for schools
At the beginning of the 2008-09 school year, the freshman class at Thomas Stone High School was looking for an interesting cause to join for their Student Service Learning (SSL) project. They wanted to help other children get the same learning opportunities they were given, and chose to support the "Pennies for Peace" charity.
Pennies for Peace is a national charity that uses donations to purchase building and educational supplies for children in Afghanistan and Pakistan villages. Stone students have collected more than $1,800 in penny donations, and students from Mary B. Neal Elementary School provided Stone with $400 of that total.
SSL projects are a graduation requirement and part of the local, state and national government classes students complete as freshman.
Staff and students at Stone plan to continue the donation campaign this summer and next school year. Donations can also be accepted in the main office at Stone.
