- Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School second graders celebrated Canada on Thursday, May 8, at the school. The students studied Canada in a social studies unit and participated in a "pretend" trip to the country. School staff and parent volunteers organized the event, which included a trip to Niagara Falls, a tasting event featuring Canadian foods and a hockey activity to recognize Canada's national sport. Students also held a parade around the school, featuring Canadian flags that were donated by the Canadian Embassy.
- Matthew Henson Middle School's Minority Achievement Committee hosted its second annual career day event, titled "From Dreams 2 Realities: Building a Foundation for Our Future," on Friday, May 9, at the school. Presenters invited to participate included the Charles County Health Department, Charles County Animal Control, Barbizon modeling agency and local caterers. Gwendolyn Briley-Strand, an actress, also performed an excerpt of her portrayal of Harriet Tubman titled "The Chosen One," for students.
- North Point High School and the Community Bank of Tri-County opened the North Point Eagles bank at the school on April 15. The goal of the bank is to help students learn how to manage finances. The bank is open every Tuesday during school lunch shifts and students can open and deposit funds into a savings account. Newsletters are also distributed quarterly to student members.
- Pre-kindergarten students and fourth graders at Indian Head Elementary School have teamed up in the name of technology. Throughout the 2007-08 school year, fourth graders have worked with the school's technology facilitator and media specialist on early -dismissal days to introduce the pre-kindergarten students to computers. The pre-kindergartners have learned how to use computers for classroom lessons.
- Kymberlee Waples, a third-grade student at Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School, was recently named the first-place winner for Charles County in the annual Southern Maryland Board of Realtors essay contest. Waples essay, titled "What My Home Means to Me," earned her a $50 prize and recognition in a ceremony held Monday, May 5. Waples teacher Betty Horton and Higdon Principal Peggy Mertes also attended the ceremony.
