Things You Should Know

  Things to know about the PSAT/NMSQT   New! The preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test will be given on October 14, 2009. This test is given once a year and there in NO MAKEUP for this test! All 10th graders will take this test during the school day as preparation for the SAT. 11th graders and 9th graders, with the appropriate mathematics level (completion of Algebra I is recommended) who wish to take the test may come to the Media Center to register. Registration will be through October 2nd.
The score of the 11th graders is used as qualifying information for the National Achievement Scholarship Program and the National Merit Scholarship Program for Outstanding Black Students.

What does the test measure? The PSAT/NMSQT measures critical reading, math problem-solving, and writing skills developed over many years, both in and out of school. You will not have to recall facts from literature, history, science, or complete math formulas, as this test measures your reasoning and critical thinking skills.

What is the test fee?
The school system pays for the 10th graders to take the test. There is a fee of $15.00 for 9th and 11th graders who wish to take the test.
How shall I prepare for the test?
The "Official Student Guide to the PSAT/NMQST" will be distributed to all 10th graders and any 9th and 11th grader that pays for the test. This guide contains information about the test and sample test questions. Go to www.collegeboard.com/psat for sample questions and practice test answer explanations.

What should I bring on test day?
  • No. 2 pencils and eraser

What happens after the test?
Students who take the test receive access to My College QuickStart, a free personalized college and career planning kit. You may log in to My College Quick Start with the access code printed on your paper score report. Scores should be returned to you in either December or January. The results of the PSAT will help you in registering for high school academic classes and making decisions about course placement.
