Principal's Message
Welcome! Let me take this opportunity to introduce you to Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School. Our school's name is the result of the consolidation of two schools, Mt. Hope Elementary School and Nanjemoy Elementary School. Our renovated school opened for students in the fall of 1983.
Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School's colors are blue and gold, and the "Beaver" is our school mascot. We celebrate our school spirit by wearing our school T-shirts every Friday.
Our student population is approximately 350 students. The racial breakdown is approximately 53% white, 46% black, .6% Native American, and .3% Hispanic. Our classrooms consist of one 3 year old classe, 2 all day Pre-K classes, 3 all day Kindergarten classes, 3 First Grades, 2 Second Grades, 2 Third Grades, 2 Fourth Grades, and 2 Fifth Grades. The average class size is 20 students.
We are a Title I school and are fortunate to receive additional federal funding, which supplements our school's county funding. This affords us both material and human resources for our instructional programs. To name a few, we have a science teacher, an instructional specialist, a reading resource teacher, a gifted education teacher, technology teacher, and a reading recovery teacher. In addition, we have art, physical education, media, computer lab, band, strings, music, speech, and guidance teachers.
Special education is provided for students with special needs. Primary and/or intermediate special education teachers and a special education instructional assistant implement this service. We utilize a modified inclusion model.
We have a 3-year-old program . Approximately 20 students participate in this all day program. Students arrive at 10:00 a.m. and leave at 4 p.m. Transportation and lunch are provided. There is a certified teacher and an instructional assistant in the class. This program is another approach to early intervention.
Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School is fortunate to have the support of a very active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and strong volunteer and mentoring programs. A before and after school daycare program is offered to parents who may need this service. It opens at 6:00 a.m. and closes at 6:00 p.m. Our school is truly a community school! We believe that home, school, and community are vital in the education of all students.
We have a School Improvement Plan that is developed yearly by our School Improvement Team. The school improvement plan reflects the Five-Year Plan for the County. The plan is reviewed twice a year. In the spring, we schedule a two-day retreat to set new goals for the upcoming year.
We encourage you to become an integral part of our school. Visit, ask questions, and most of all remember, "It takes a village to educate one child." We need your help!
