Positive Behavior In School

Overview

At Malcolm, our students pledge to be polite, positive and respectful.  They come prepared to learn each day and do their best.  Our school motto is "I can be anything, I can learn anything if I believe in myself and work hard".  Project Respect was designed to help continue our climate of cooperation, academic excellence, respect and safety at Malcolm. Our three school rules are simple:  Respect Self, Respect Others, and Respect Property.

PBIS is a program designed to encourage positive behavior in school.  The goal is for compliments to outweigh corrections by 3 to 1.  We understand that behaviors requiring correction will occur.  Behaviors infractions are categorized as Levels 1, 2, or 3.  Typically, Level 1 referrals result in a student generated letter to parents.  Level 2 referrals receive teacher contact and classroom based consequences.  Level 3 infractions, receive administrative consequences.  Mrs. Pugh addresses Level 3 referrals for Pre- Kindergarten through second grade students and Ms. Williams addresses third through fifth graders, as well as bus referrals.  Each quarter, students who are "Referral Free" will be invited to attend a celebration. Overall, PBIS program is designed to build great character and personal responsibility in an effort to reduce undesired behaviors.

Brown Bag Awards

As a part of Project Respect, Brown Bags are given to classes who are showing good manners and following PBIS in the cafeteria.  A table captain will collect the brown bags for their table.  At the end of lunch, the class with the most brown bags will be awarded the Brown Bag Award and receive a small lunch bag on the weekly chart.  At the end of each week the class with the highest number Brown Bag Awards will be rewarded.

Mustang Moolah

What is Mustang Moolah?  Mustang Moolah is Malcolm money that students are awarded for presenting outstanding positive behavior.  Students can earn Mustang Moolah by being brown bag winners in the cafeteria, by obtaining top blue ribbon behavior points with their classmates on a weekly basis, by showing good bus rider behavior, by receiving academic awards, and by "wowing" their special area or classroom teachers.

What can students do with their Mustang Moolah?  Students will have the opportunity to spend their money at the Mustang Market.  At the market students will be able to purchase gently used or new items.  So as not to deplete the market supplies, students will have a cap on the number of items purchased/ or amount of Moolah permitted to spend.

Mustang Market

Are you looking to make room in your play chest for new toys? Click the link to see how your donations can support the Market.

The Mustang Market gives students an opportunity to spend their hard earned Mustang Moolah.  It is a great way to reward students for all of their hard work and good behavior.

Items in the market vary in size, age level, and price.  The market runs primarily on donations of gently-used toys, games, books, purses, jewelry, costumes, etc.  Donations will be gratefully accepted throughout the year and can de dropped off at the office. When doing your seasonal house cleaning, please think of the market as you are going through your things.

Volunteers are also needed for the set-up day and student shopping days. Please check the schedule below and contact Mrs. Sachsel, a parent volunteer and our savvy Mustang Market Manager, if you are available to assist.

Character Cut-Outs

As part of our PBIS program here at Malcolm, we want to make sure we are rewarding positive behavior.  Students have the opportunity to receive a Courtesy Hand, Persevering Smiley Face, Respectful Star, Responsibility Book, and an Honesty Apple throughout the day.  When a student demonstrates these certain character traits, they will receive a cut-out which is placed on their class's window.  At the end of the week, all cut-outs are entered into a drawing for a prize from the prize cart.  Please make sure these character traits are displayed everywhere you go: school, bus, cafeteria, an assembly, the hallway, bathroom, the community, and at home.  These character traits are very important to your success in and out of school.
