Grade Level News

Third Grade - January

What is happening in Literacy?

Literacy is our Reading, Writing, and Working with Words block. We will be finished reading stories from Theme 3: Incredible Stories. All of these stories have an amazing plot and some very interesting characters.  We will read the following stories: The Garden of Abdul Gasazi; Fugitives on Four Legs; and Dinosaur Bob. While reading The Garden of Abdul Gasazi, we will focus on the story structure. Story structure is the characters, the plot, and the setting of the story. We will read and compare Fugitives on Four Legs and Dinosaur Bob. While we read these stories we will review the strategies learned during Theme 3. We will review fantasy and realism; drawing conclusions, and following directions.  In Vocabulary we will work on prefixes and review homophones and contractions. In Spelling we will spell words that are homophones and review previously learned words.  In Writing we will learn how to write dialogue by using quotation marks. We will also review how to write a letter and a story. We will also begin Theme 4: Animal Habitats. Theme 4 focuses on stories that have animals playing a large part in them.

What is happening in Math?

For the month of January we will be working on multiplication and division.  The third grade general math class will work on multiplication and basic division.  They will discuss remainders and how to solve division problems.  The accelerated math class will also be working on division. They will divide three digit numbers by one digit numbers using different strategies.  Please continue to encourage your child to study their multiplication facts at home. We will continue to work on our problem solving strategies.

What is happening in Health and Social Studies?

In Health we will begin a new unit in Health: I Like Your Attitude. This unit focuses on how to be positive and respecting others. We will also discuss values and how these can help you avoid bad situations. Refusal skills will also be taught. These are ways to say No and stand your ground.

In Social Studies we will explore Japan.  We will look at the homes, schools, language, and food of Japan. We will discuss haiku poetry.

Keep working hard!
