Second Grade - January
Math:
Working with categorical data: Students will identify and sort data by common attributes.
They organize and represent data they collect by playing Guess My Rule and
taking surveys of their favorite things.
Pocket and Teeth Data: Students will work with numerical data as they collect
information about the number of pockets worn by their classmates and the number
of teeth lost by second graders and other elementary-age students. Throughout
the investigation they organize and represent data.
Language Arts:
We will be concluding with the Theme: Adventures, Around
Town: Neighborhood and Community, and will introduce and implement the Theme:
Delights, Amazing Animals with a Focus on Biography.
Each child will receive the spelling words for our new Theme:
Delights during the first week of January. Please encourage your child to
practice reading, spelling, and writing these words. Each story and new
spelling skill we introduce will pertain to these words.
Health and Science:
The Wide World of Food – we will learn about the food pyramid/nutrition. Students will discuss the importance of eating foods high in nutritional value. Our science unit Earth Science. Students will learn about composition and interactions of matter in the world in which we live.
Social Studies:
Communities Have History - Students learn about the diversity and commonality, human interdependence, and global cooperation of the people of Maryland, the US and the World through a multicultural and historic perspective.
**Special Note:Please read with your child nightly and give them opportunities to practice their writing. They have a great imagination they love to express.
January is a busy testing month for second grade. Lots of
rest and homework completion will go a long way!
