1st grade News November UpdatesConferencesParent–Teacher Conferences will be held November 5th. There will no school for students that day. If you are unsure of what your conference time is, or have not yet signed up for a time yet, please contact your child's teacher to get a time set up if you would like to meet. We have done so much in First Grade, we would love to share it with you!
LiteracyWe will start working in Theme 3 of Houghton Mifflin and with that brings Spelling Tests! We will send home practice for the spelling words in the weekly homework, but a practice spelling test Thursday night before the test will help your child do their best on the test at school. Additionally we will continue reading fantasy and realism and comparing the characteristics of the two types of literature. November is the month that Indian Head Elementary will be displaying First Grade writing. We are the first grade level to showcase their writings, please ask your student about what they wrote about fall!
WritingWe will also start working on hand writing and spacing this quarter. Sometimes we start writing so quickly it gets a little jumbled together and a little hard to read. But we will be working on slowing down and doing our personal best so everyone can read our amazing writing pieces. Right now in writing, we are working on descriptive writing, choosing interesting words, and the difference between an action word and a naming word. When we put everything together, we are getting some really interesting writing pieces that students are working very hard to finish.
MathWe will be staring a new unit in math based on solving story problems. We will be working on number composition, or using different sets numbers to equal the same total (3+5=8 and 4+4=8). Another facet of numbers we will be working on is seeing a number in many different ways. For instance, 12 can be 10 + 2, it can be 13-1, or it can be 5+5+2. We will continue working on number operations but in addition to adding numbers, we will also start subtracting. We have worked very hard in the beginning of the year to solidify skills that they will use in later math units. We have worked on how to solve story problems and they can do a great job solving problems when adding numbers. Now we are making them stretch their mental muscles and work on subtraction problems. There will be lots of interesting games along the way that help them learn and reinforce these skills and they don't even know they're learning! Be sure to ask them what their favorite games are!
