5th grade News  November UpdatesMathWe will be finishing up out division unit and starting our GEOMETRY unit!!
We will be covering, and the students will be assessed on, the following geometric topics:
Identify and describe relationships of lines and line segments in geometric figures or pictures
Identify and describe the radius and diameter of a circle
Compare and classify quadrilaterals by length of sides and types of angles
Compare triangles by sides
Identify and classify pyramids and prisms by the number of edges, faces or vertices; and base
Compare a plane figure to faces of solid geometric figure
Identify, describe, and draw angles, parallel line segments, and perpendicular line segments
Identify and describe the results of translations, reflections, and rotations of geometric figures
Measure a single angle and angles in regular polygons
Identify or describe geometric figures as similar
LiteracyWe will continue with our GIVE IT ALL YOU'VE got theme!! The remaining stories are Mae Jemison: Space Scientist, Iditarod Dream and Me, Mop and the Moondance Kid. We will finish off this theme with a focus on Poetry! Children will read several different kinds of poetry and even write their own.
While finishing this theme the children will continue to work on their reading strategies to help them become stronger, more fluent readers.
WritingWe will be writing a perspective pieces about what it was like on a plantation in North America during the 1700s. Children will choose to write from the perspective of a slave, an overseer or a planter.
We will also be working on spelling: words with the long i sound, specifically –igh; /ur/ and /ir/; a review week and words that are homophones.
Some of our target skills are multiple meaning words, context clues, suffixes (-ive and –ic) , homophones, and poetry!!
Social Studies & HealthWe are now reading about North America in the 1700s. We are learning about the 13 colonies. We will be discussing the first forms of government and slavery in the colonies. We will also be learning about the French and Indian war.
